Any pics of the old Borough Hall on Tremont?

I don't have any. It was on a hill and a great place to photograph the 3rd Avenue El. The building is now long gone.

Yeah, I know. I never had a chance to shoot the building or take El shots from it.

Having biked the entire length of the 3rd Ave El in the Bronx in the last year it just feels like there is something missing from that street. That entire stretch of wide avenue with nothing much on it just feels like a ghost town.

Are you referring to transfer passageways from the subway to the el at 149th St.
Either at Forgotten New York or another webpage, I saw photos of mosaic tiled signs in the subway that said something like* To Third Avenue Elevated Trains.
Does anyone remember these, have photo of them maybe?

When was the current Supreme Court building (seen from the old Yankee Stadium back in the day) at 851 Grand Concourse, built? And did it replace this edifice?

It was designed in 1931 and built between 1931 and 1934. I have cases there quite often and its a grand old edifice. The Supreme Court building on Sutphin Boulevard in Jamaica was built around the same time.

Yes it did, but Borough Hall lasted for decades more. See the Wikipedia article linked elsewhere in the thread.

The present day Supreme Court Building was completed in 1934. It house the offices of the Bronx Borough President. The old Boro Hall remained in use for some time after the Boro President moved out. But it was abandoned sometime in the sixties.

Thank you for the photos! Great!

That passageway that you speak of allowed passengers to change direction between Bronx-bound and Manhattan-bound #2 and #5 trains as well as use the Third Avenue Elevated line. Once that passageway closed, there was no longer a way to reverse direction.

When the MTA reroutes #2 or #5 trains from the local stations, say during track work when all trains run express to/from 180th Street, the MTA will say to riders to change at 149th Street-Grand Concourse, when a couple of decades ago, it would say, change at 149th Street-Third Avenue for the by-passed stations.

Do you have any idea when this closed? Pardon my for being a youngster, but where did this connect in with the rest of the station? Was there an exit to the street to the left on the way to the elevated station?

Thanks

Looking at this shot, the exit to the street was to the right, out of view here, on the uptown platform. The foto was taken on the ramp that let to the stairs which led to the underpass that went under n/b & s/b tracks; you can see the incline in the footpath. To the right of the wall, beyond the installed gate would be the passage the led to the uptown platform of the #2 & #5 trains. To the right of that passageway was the exit to the street.
Passengers could access the El either within the fare-paid zone or outside of it. There were turnstiles up on top, above 149th st street.
Playing tag and other games was sensational on that station complex.
There often times was a guard or platform conductor seated either below or at the top of the escalators. They generally didn't bother us, unless we became too much of a nuisance.
What was great about the upper level mezzanine was it was below the track level of the El. The old center track was covered over. There was the use of lots of wooden planking, giving the impression of a cattle chute. The tracks were pretty open and just above people's heads. It was fun to watch the trucks pass by and hear the growling sound of those old motors.

1) Interesting that I see Philadelphia's hydrants in the last picture. I never see them anywhere else.
2) the third picture looks like the school zone sign has fatter kids and parents than the images on the signs do today. I wonder.

3) I see they even dealth with Lebron even back then. I wonder who he played for in the 70's.
