I think the MTA has decided that a 60ft car for divisions that can accept it is the right size for a rapid transit car on the NYCTS. Sometime in the early 1950s there was an article that appeared in ERA Headlights written if I recall by Sidney H.Bingham who was the head of the B of T at the time that mentioned that after careful research and experimentation, it was determined that 60 ft was the optimal length for a rapid transit car operating on the NYCTS. |

There are probably enough places on the NYCTS that can’t be shaved any more to accommodate cars that won’t easily fit. There are also other factors to be considered besides horizontal end and center excess. There are areas on the system where up and downgrades can impact on VERTICAL end and center excesses as well and those can’t be as easily modified. |

ON the T-44s and 46s, there was an emergency switch by the end doors to be used in case of emergency. As soon as the rowdy teenagers discovered it, they would break the glass and operate the switch. At the time, if an end door unlock light illuminated on the console the M/M was required to stop the train and investigate which delayed service so the feature was removed and not included on the R-68s at all. |

What was the point of purchasing the R68/68a as 75ft cars knowing they were going to be locked in for 40 years?The 68s were basically replacement cars for the southern division lines. All of them went to routes based out of there..or routes that operated there. B/D/N and Q. The 46s were Queens cars...the 44s were exclusively assigned to the A line. The true purpose of these cars were never fulfilled bu any means..so what was the point? |

Initially, the R-44s were not assigned exclusively to the A Line. They were divided among the A, D, E, and F lines. None of the cars were intended for any specific lines, it just worked out that way. Even the R-10s which became pretty much synonymous with the iND A Line were not all intended for the IND. The 3000 series cars (although it was never made clear if it were only 3000- 3099 or the entire 3000 series) were supposed to be for the BMT. |

Actually at the present time the BMT Eastern operates the newest rolling stock on the NYCTS. In fact since the 1930s, the BMT Eastern has had the newest equipment on the BMT starting with the Multis and continuing with the R-16s in the 1950s. |

I've read many complains on here about how poorly the eastern division is and why do they have the lousy R42s and the old time R32s and blah blah blah. You're the expert here but in my opinion the 75 ft cars do serve a worthy purpose on some select lines. This idea of uniformity across the entire system is not a well thought out policy. Not all the lines are the same and they demand cars to meet their unique needs. |

The Eastern Division is a much different animal than the rest of the former BMT and the IND, with car length and train length. Perhaps its lines should have been designated with Roman Numerals to distinguish from the rest of the B Division. |

Actually, the ideal situation would be one standard sized railcar that could be used on the entire transit system but the differences on the IRT make that impractical necessitating 2 sizes of railcar for the system or else having an entire fleet of 51 ft long 9 ft wide cars. The differences in train length can be dealt with relatively easily and if the MTA really wanted to, it could extend the platforms in the Eastern to handle 10 car trains of 60 footers. |

You would have to use 2 60 foot cars, or run 3 60 foot cars, closing the first and last sets of doors in the end cars. Are the stations about 160 feet? Can the shuttle handle 2 60 foot cars without too much over crowding? |

Today's cpu controller cars can easily be programmed not to open any set of doors at any station . It is just software . So no need to extend platforms at stations where trains just don't fit of barely fit . Much cheaper than actually construction with nyc criminally high labor rates . Just reconfigure front car by removing some seats or reconfigure seats to allow access to second door to reduced potentially added dwell time. |

This would likely also include rebuilding the upper level of Broadway and other necessary work to make the entire Myrtle-Broadway station ADA accessible.The one station on the Myrtle El portion of what likely becomes a "Black (V)" train that probably would be rebuilt is Sumner Avenue before going to where they can be a transfer to the (G) and then Franklin Avenue, followed by the existing shuttle stops and then running as a 24/7 Brighton Local to Coney Island (in this, the (B) would also become a Brighton Local while the (Q) becomes the Brighton Express 24/7 to Brighton Beach though also remaining local and extended to Coney Island late nights). |

The cesspool of incompetence that passes for MTA planning should have rebuilt the Franklin Shuttle with full 600 ft platforms double tracked all the way to Fkln with a new island platform built at Fkln. That way the Fkln Line could be used to accept rerouted trains off the Brighton Line in the event of a serious service disruption on either the Manny B or in the Montague St Tunnel. There might even be a market for an additional Brighton Lcl service to supplement the Qs allowing Brighton passengers to ride to Fkln and change there for 8 Av service instead of taking a Q to Dekalb and an R to Metrotech or a B to W 4 St. |
