Chicago Ventra Question

Posted by New Flyer #857 on Sun Mar 24 11:09:53 2019

If I order a Ventra card in advance to be mailed to me, that is ready to go worry-free for three days when I get off a plane at O'Hare, should I just purchase a 3-day pass and add $5 to cover the O'Hare surcharge? Am I doing that right? Will both the $5 come off and the pass activate once I enter at O'Hare?

If memory serves, when I went to Chicago last September for the CERA 80th anniversary, I bought a Ventra card at O'Hare and bought a 3-day pass for $20. I passed through the turnstile without incident and used the pass for three days. On the fourth day, Sunday, I added $20 for another three days at a downtown subway station. The card decided to deduct per ride. I just checked - the card still has $10 credit on it good until June 2021. My conclusion is that Vetra directions are not clear and the software driving it is not perfect.

It would be best to purchase right the O'Hare Blue station. If you buy a multi day pass, that also includes the ride at O'Hare. So in other words, there is no need for you to pay an additional $5.00. It's already included.

I would get it in advance. Sometimes the queues to use the machines at O'hare and long and slow...

Thanks; is it that buying the multi day pass in general gets me out of the surcharge or is it that when I buy at O'Hare it will be $25 for the 3-day rather than $20?

Ok, I was going to order in advance, but it sounds like getting it at O'Hare will be simpler since I'll just automatically be charged whatever I'm supposed to pay. I won't be in a rush.

So far out of all my travels, only Washington DC did I order SmarTrip in advance. I'm not sure it saved me much time, but it was nice to just walk right into Metrorail at Union Station with card already in hand. This doesn't count the number of times I've returned to a city with a card that I already had from a previous visit.
