BMT E-type

Why weren’t the Multis classified as “E-type?”

Why weren’t the Multis classified as “E-type?”

Probably for the same reasons why the Multi's, Green Hornet and Zephry weren't called the E, F or G Types.

These cars were so modern and state of the art (for that time), I guess the BMT would rather assign catchy names to them to appeal to the riding public.

That's my theory.

Good question, Bill! Even the later BMT World's Fair rebuilds were know as the "Q" types. Give us an "M" for the Multis!

Muti-section is descriptive rather than catchy. The A/B-types had "Standard" and the D-type had "Triplex." "E-type Multisection" would have been analogous.

In all my time riding the BMT from the 1950s, I never heard the terms “standard” or “triplex” used. The 67 footers were called “steels” in the Eastern and “ABs” in the Southern and the triplexes referred to simply as “Ds.” According to some sources, the Qs were not usually referred to as “Q types” but merely as “Q cars” since they didn’t fall into the BMT’s scheme of lettering types of cars like the H & M did.

Weren't the cars purchased from SIRTOA given a BMT letter type designation?
