Eastern Parkway-Brooklyn Museum

Is there any other proof of the western mezzanine’s existence?

When I was a teenager living in Queens in the '60s and wanted to go to the main Brooklyn Public Library, my friends who lived in Brooklyn told me to take the back of the IRT and get off at Eastern Pkwy and use the rear exit, which was closer to the library than the Grand Army Plaza station, even though the library is on Grand Army Plaza.

This must be where I exited, but it doesn't look like what I remember.

I just found an image from the New York Transit Museum showing the median exit from 1963.

Do you happen to remember when in the 1960s you used the entrances? I am trying to date the closure of the entrances, and any information would be very helpful.

Thanks.

Is there any evidence of the stairway going down to platform level from that entrance?

There is a mezzanine. The entrances are used as emergency exits, and there are emergency exit signs on the doors on the platform.

I am very curious about this one. My grandparents lived at 95 eastern parkway which is right across the service road to that entrance. I had not been back to that neighborhood since 1974 till last year when I noticed the entrance was gone. I was kicking my brain saying I knew there had been an entrance, but did not find it. I am really curious when it closed.

On another topic related to that station if anyone is following OMNY installations that station is now the only one on the IRT not equipped. I figure it will be activated very soon.

Was the entrance still open in 1974 when you were in the neighborhood last?

Yep, that’s the exit I always used for the library.

I really don’t remember. After 1969 I was not there much.

I used that exit between 1966 and 1970. I don't remember the median exit, only the one on the south side of Eastern Parkway, near the rear of the library. Is it possible that one exit was for the Brooklyn-bound platform and the other was for Manhattan-bound? I don't recall a mezzanine but it's entirely possible there was one.

(How did this thread get resurrected after a year and a half?)

There is a mezzanine, and I have the station plans (though I cannot share them). I resurrected this thread as I am doing more research on closed entrances, and am working to try to get the MTA to reopen entrances. Thanks for the information!

There was a time when crime was high and the MTA closed entrances all over to save on manpower and reduce crime. I would think late 70s or early 80s.

I am well steeped in the history of closed entrances. I am looking for a specific year or a more specific time frame.

There is also a (I think) closed entrance built into the wall of the Botanic Gardens on the south side of Eastern Parkway between the museum and the library.

I couldn't find one, either, but I won't let it consume me. Try the MTA website, if it really bothers you. From what I gather here, the people who used to live in that area cannot remember the closing, either.

The MTA website has nothing. Information is hard to come by, but I will try to get as much information as is possible.

Now that the station is getting an elevator, Transit can't claim the ADA as a reason not to reopen it. Cost, on the other hand, is still an issue.

I found an aerial image in which you can sort of make out the median entrance in 1966.
Closed Eastern Parkway entrance 1966
Closed Eastern Parkway entrance 1966

Were you stating that you last used the entrance in 1970 or are you saying you can't recall the exact data you used the entrance?

Thanks.
