G trains will not be running longer trains.

Posted by Chicago44 on Wed Feb 13 13:51:40 2019

Just announced, the L train will not be running longer trains during part of the L train shutdown on weekends.

Si it looks like the G train will NOT be running longer trains at all & stay with the shorter 4 car R68 trains which means that the 4 car sets of R160 will stay on the J/M/Z & some on the L lines, some R179 will go to the J/Z lines to finally replace the R42 cars & the 8 car R179 will go to the C line to replace the R32 cars which probably means that the C train will not be going to longer trains.

The G train, not the L train, mistake.

That means I don't think the R42's will last until summer, and they may get ruthless with some of the R32's by the time all R179's are in service.

Yes, but didn't they scrap R30s only a couple years after GOH?

That was only to get them through the Myrtle Cut shutdown with minimal maintenance. Their MDBF is still worse than the R32.

I saw it in an AM New York article on Wednesday. Ronnie Hakim had a phone briefing with reporters about plans to mitigate the partial L shutdown.

The weekend M trains will likely be running to 96th/2nd. We'll see if they make them 2PTO and 8 cars or not.

(I remember 3 car GG trains on the Queens Blvd line).

Sometimes definitions get lost in translation. When it's said that longer G trains will not be run, they could mean no additional trains (shorter headways) being run. But additional cars (8/60' foot cars) could still be in plans.

Let's see what happens by April 28th when the new pick/new schedules (if any) go into effect before we give up on seeing longer than 300' trains on the G.

The t/o's and c/r's actually start picking these jobs on Feb. 25th. That will not show the # of cars on each G train, but if they scrap weekend/holiday OPTO it could present a hint. No way could they get away with 4/60' cars on that line. Hopefully some info about the L jobs will leak out too.

The link Marc posted stated this.

Why would they not be 8 car trains, from Metro Ave to 96/2? Hasn't it been decades since the last 4-car non-shuttle service?

The L has been shut on many nights and weekends in the past 6 months. If they didn't need more G trains for those shutdowns, why would they need them for future shutdowns?

(It would be different if they needed them weekdays just for additional traffic, but I assume you're not referring to that.)

It's to be weekends, so they don't need an expanded subway car fleet for that.

Other than SAS reroute of the Q train, and the W train redux, which consumes about 5 more train sets, and possible full length C trains, which calls for 36 cars, they need to retain about 100 R32's after all the R179's are running without problems.

I don't think the R42's will live to see summer. Any R32 that gives them a lot of trouble will be gone after that.

I still think that all the R32 & R42 cars will be retired after the completion of the R179 car fleet order.

It isn't mentioned in the article so it may not be happening or it just might not have come up on the call. The article mentions a "shuttle bus service in a loop to bring riders to connect to the L and G at Metropolitan Avenue/Lorimer Street and the J and M at Marcy Avenue," which may serve a similar function as the transfer, reducing overcrowding at Bedford and at the Lorimer/Metropolitan transfer. I submitted a question about the transfer to the L Project Newsletter.

I suspect that, as with the original plans for the full shutdown, they are going to have to be ready to make changes to the mitigation strategies once the work begins. I also suspect that the work they say they still plan to do at 6th and at Union Square may have to be changed because it would cause issues during weekdays when the L is running normally.

Honestly, they shouldn't retire anything else until the 211 are pressed into service and running without issue.

The R179 is a net add of 46 cars. They need fleet expansion more than that.
