[PHOTOS] Elizabethport, NJ |
|
Posted by Bill Newkirk on Thu Feb 7 15:52:29 2019 This single track line that crossed E-Port at grade. Anyone know which line this was ? I think that's the NJ Turnpike on the right. (February 1979) This appears to be a different station at the same location. IIRC there was a "wye" at this location. Elizabethport must have been abuzz with activity in the glory days. (February 1979) The old CNJ Elizabethport shops ten years after the top three photos. (August 24, 1989) View of the shops transfer table, gone to seed.(August 24, 1989) Elizabethport today Speaking of the Bayonne shuttle, on the Bayonne side, this is what remained of the approach to the span across the bay. (July 18, 1987) The Bayonne side today. Thanking all in advance for positive comments |

Thanks for depressing me.If the state of NJ had kept all of that open and spent the Aldene money on a PATH extension to the CRRNJ Terminal instead, they could have saved several hundreds of billions over "light rail" with limited range and even more limited revenue. And the Crusader might have kept going too, instead of being reduced to RDCs. |

I rode the last train from NWK to E-Port and then the last train from E-Port to Jersey City. This was the night before the Aldene Plan went into effect. The CNJ was never the same after that. WARNING: not transit related.I remember some female vocalist miming "Cry Me A River" on Alan Freed, way back when. My reaction was, 'now my parents music' is playing on a rock'n'roll show? Remember Mr. Freed, a scapegoat for the other DJ's who took payola. He had a good show. Flipping between his and Dick Clark's shows, channels 5 to 7, I decided I liked Alan Freed's better. |

The abandonment from Jersey City to Newark was bad enough. The HBLR's branch to West Side Avenue runs on the Jersey City segment; they filled in the cut under MLK Drive (formerly Jackson Avenue) and created a grade crossing. The pipe dreamer in me dreamed about the Newark branch being extended west into Irvington and then turning southwest to connect with the Rahway Valley in Union. (That RVRR ROW over Morris Avenue and Vauxhall Road was torn down in the late 90s/early 2000s.) |

I always found it weird that they filled in the cut and made a grade crossing, after the railroad got rid of the crossing in the first place. Though it's probably gone now, when I first rode the branch, at what looked like an original station building, you could see the mostly buried entrance to the old platform. |

Interesting how the main line low platforms remained right until the end. Also, the Raritan-Bay Head trains passed through here. And if it had remained open, people would have used it to get to Jersey Gardens Mall, funny enough. |
