I wonder if robotic construction workers could significantly cut the cost of new subways. Often asserted is the fact that safety is taken lots more seriously now than it was in the early 1900's; perhaps if the workers were robots, especially for the most risky operations, worker safety (a laudable goal, of course) wouldn't balloon costs to the point where building a new line simply isn't feasible. Construction of a single new line should not take generations as we have seen with the Second Avenue line.

robots would be a huge step forward. That said, I continue to believe that far shallower tunnels are cheaper to build. Think how much time is wasted merely going from whichever site entry gate down to the deep tunnel and back each shift. Not to mention vastly fewer tons of spoils to remove.

I saw that line years before when they hadn't started the work on the stubway and its completion was by no means a certainty.
