I wonder if robotic construction workers could significantly cut the cost of new subways. Often asserted is the fact that safety is taken lots more seriously now than it was in the early 1900's; perhaps if the workers were robots, especially for the most risky operations, worker safety (a laudable goal, of course) wouldn't balloon costs to the point where building a new line simply isn't feasible. Construction of a single new line should not take generations as we have seen with the Second Avenue line. |
