Tuscarora Forgotten Station of the Week No. 1 Storm King

Posted by IRTRedbirdR33 on Thu Jan 10 11:57:55 2019

Tuscarora Forgotten Station of the Week / No. 1 Storm King

New York Central Railroad
Hudson Division

Storm King station was located on the Hudson Line just north (railroad west) of the Breakneck Ridge Tunnel and about one half mile south of todays’ Breakneck Ridge tunnel. There was a rock quarry here at one time. The depot itself was closed in 1933 and no traces remain.

If you are familiar with the topography of the area you know that Storm King Mountain is located on the west bank of the Hudson while the Hudson Line is on the east side. Nevertheless the railroad chose to name the station after the famous landmark.

There is a parking area midway between the tunnel and the Breckneck Ridge station. It was formerly the location of a grade crossing. The highway that we now call US Route 9D was built about 1910 as the Beacon-Bear Mountain Highway. Breckneck Ridge itself juts directly into the river so it was necessary to route the highway around the base by means of grade crossings on both sides of the tunnel. Sometime in the late twenties or early thirties a highway tunnel was built to the east of and at a higher elevation than the railroad tunnel. The two grade crossings were discontinued but eventually became ad hoc parking areas. There is quite a lot to see in the area including the remains of the former Cornish Estate and the abandoned rock quarry at Little Stony Point.

Author’s note: This is the first installment in a new series that will look at abandoned rail stations. It has been said that time, tide and the IRT wait for no man. Here it is 2019 and Dean Street station’s closing was over twenty five years ago. Worth Street has been shut for over fifty.
Sometime these posts will be short. There may now be a lot to say about a simple station just to note its location and closing. Sometime they will be longer and more detailed like today’s post.
The younger guys here may find it of interest.

Indeed. Once upon a time there was a Breakneck Lodge resturant located along 9D right before the tunnels with great views of the Hudson, Bannermans & the Hudson line. Took my mom there for dinner once and awhile. I'd drive down to Woodside & bring her up for a visit when I lived in Beacon. She always enjoyed a Manhattan with her meal & me my working class Bud Light. Food pricey & mediocore. One of those joints where you pay for the view. It was around the time they had switchers bring out strings of gons filled with muck when they were cleaning up the site where a Mallory battery factory that existed just south of the Cold Spring Station on the land side. They put in a hand thrown switch connecting Tk 1 to a temporary siding there for that work. I'd see those trains from time to time.
The Breakneck Lodge is long since extinct now. The Mallory site is all cleaned up, the siding is ripped up & is now a mini dog walk trail. The switch was removed & returned to Amtrak, from whom it was borrowed, from what I was told.
Just one of the fine memories I have from living in the Hudson Valley.

Jim: The owners of the Breakneck Ridge Lodge did sell the place but new owner came it. Its now called Chalet on the Hudson. I believe it is a catering place.
