They're looking for a "serious safety issue" with a bridge or other structure, that NJ Transit can plausibly use as an excuse to indefinitely "suspend" ACRL service.

I am very discouraged about this but not surprised. NJT was never forthright. I was keeping my fingers crossed that the line would come back, but now it looks like this is not happening. In the US there have been numerous examples 'temporary' suspensions of service becoming permanent. NJT stated that the service would be return in 'early 2019' but 'early 2019' starts on January 1st. 'Early 2019' becomes 'mid-2019' then 2020 and so on. Also there is a history in the US of maintenance blitzes (as on the AC Line today) taking place before abandonment.

It is kind of aprapos because it is the ACRL and AC is associated with gambling. So it is a gamble on whether it will reopen.

And if I owned one of the casinos there, I'd been filing a lawsuit to demand a delay for at least one year in this because of sports betting becoming legal, citing this year being in some cases the only opportunity to get sports bettors to come in droves before Pennsylvania gets up and running OR demanding massive compensation that would include having to get the line up and running quickly was massive penalties as an incentive to get the job done.

Guess he wants to get revenge on AC for screwing the racing industry in New Jersey.

The New Jersey Sire Stakes program for Harness Racing, which used to be the top program in the country has become a joke a recent years thanks to what Christie did in crippling The Meadowlands in particular.

BAD....

I remain suspicious of almost all "temporary" closures- even the M line closure in Bushwick had me slightly worried. But given NJT's current state...this is concerning indeed, when management says they're "re-evaluating". I mean, if they were committed to the re-opening, they would just do it as soon as the work is done.

The only closure I trust to be temporary is the pending L closure. There's just too much political pressure to let that job stall halfway through and the line never re-open.

And I don't see any Princeton Dinky being run by those new MLV EMUs, since it looks like they require two cab cars and thus a minimum of three cars.

I expect you to be silent when NJT reopens the Dinky and ACL.

What equipment will be used on the Dinky when the 1300' are retired is for the future...……...a long future since Bombardier are building the new cars.

By then there will be a different governor and different NJT chief honcho to make that decision.

Article in today's Inquirer states that PTC installation on the AC Line is complete and the 7.5 miles of track replacement is also complete. Service COULD resume when testing is completed, but won't be restored until Transit feels like restoring it.

There's 2 problems: the staffing shortage and the PTC-equipped cab shortage.

I'm guessing the staffing shortage will be resolved sooner since they've dropped the NJ residency requirement.

We'll know the equipment shortage has been resolved when NJT says they don't need SEPTA's AEM-7s anymore.

Bad analogy - The whole problem is a shortage of PTC equipment. There isn't enough time as it is to get the fleet they actually used brought up to code, much less engines they never touch.

Better analogy is you have a 2007 Mustang and 74 Pinto in the garage, neither of which have working headlights, and you need to drive at night *right now*, and you borrow your neighbor's beater pickup.

Just listening to the radio (1450am WPG in AC) in the car the host (forgot his name) made some comments about the AC Line service. He said that he will forward any news on the radio. But he felt that the AC Line will not be coming back. I unfortunately hold this same opinion. As I have indicated previously, 'temporary' closures have a way of becoming permanent in the US, numerous examples. I have also noted that 'maintenance blitzes' are no assurance of the return of service. At this point what I find most telling though is that NJT has not given any date for the return of service. Duh. NJT has not been forthright. If NJT's agenda is to drop the AC service, it should just say so instead of playing vague games like 'evaluating the schedule' and so on. It seems now that NJT is simply smoke and mirrors, and it does not take much to see through this.

The ACRL is very ill-suited for light rail, considering it has very long stretches of 80MPH running between infrequent stops.

I think the train will return, simply because it's cheaper to run than the replacement buses. As for *when*, I'm guessing the answer to that will be once the last cab gets PTC installed.

The attitude around this reminds me of all the doomsayers when the LSL was temporarily rerouted to BOS with no NY section this past summer. "It's never coming back!" "Anderson's killed the long distance network, and my dog!" Oh look, the LSL is right back to the way it was before the reroute. Doomsayers disappeared into woodwork.
