An emergency comfort break along the route by a crew member is not taken lightly. For sure a TSS will meet you and determine in his opinion if the employee is fit for duty or not (intoxicated smell or slurred speech for example). Then the TSS will make a notation of the incident in his "butcher book". Since this doesn't happen too often the TSS will probably remember it and the superintendent will find out about it because the lateness of the train is charge to RTO and RTO does not like being charged for anything. If the crew member makes a habit out of taking comforts en-route, he will be sent to the Medical Assessment Center for evaluation.So if anybody wants one of these t/o or c/r jobs make sure you have a paper cup in the cab to pee in if necessary and have a strong rectum to hold it in till you get to the terminal. Transit don't play. |

In the summer of 1969, I was working a PM QB and at Dekalb had to do a #2 badly. Im secured my train, took my handles and ran to the employee toilet in Dekalb tower. It was the fastest dump I ever took and got back on my train ASAP, recharged and made it to Stillwell with in the 4 min “on time” allowance. |

One day while I was working the PM out of Met, after a normally busy morning where I didn't even eat breakfast, I did not have time to eat lunch at home so I stopped at the greasy spoon outside of Met for a couple of burgers. 2? Yeah, because the meat he used shrunk down to nothing.I made it to and from Ninth Ave. fine. As soon as I left Met on trip 2 to Bay Pky. I felt rumblings in the front and back. Will I make it to Bay Pky.? I didn't think so, but I toughed it out. I somehow made it. Upon arrival we were supposed to pull our train to the relay position with the switchman pulling us out. That was going to be a no go for me today! I dumped the train and was never off the train so quick before or since. I'm screaming at the top of my lungs "Vinny (the dispatcher), I can't do this today. The door to the office was open and he came running out. He knew I was in distress. I just made it to the "can" and did I ever go. By the time I cleaned myself up and sheepfully went upstairs, everybody was laughing and holding their noses. The stink had come all the way up to the tower! Then it hit me. The cook was frying bacon right next to my burgers. So not only did I get the grease from his burgers, but also bacon grease. |

I was on a streetcar there, and all of a sudden, in the middle of the route, all of a suddrn, the operator stops, jumps out of the streetcar and say I'll be right back folks.....runs into a store, and a few minutes later comes out with a bag with a po'boy sandwich. Jumps back in, and off we go.None of the passengers say a word or complain.. just a t totally normal. Imagine that in NY. |
