And they want one-person and zero-person trains, really?

Did they issue the conductors brand new badges with original issued numbers? His badge with 89432 makes sense for veteran but mine had the "M" and not MTA

Article says he has 21 years on the job. Can’t be an 89 hire.

Was wondering why the northbound trains (N/R/D) showed a halt on Subwaytime around Sunday 12:05pm at 36th (for approx 15 minutes). Website said "due to NYPD activity".

Conductor is a hero.

I don’t recall how the C/R badge numbers were figured out, but my old C/R badge which as issued in 1966 had the “TA”logo was 80118. For a few months before that, I had the old punched aluminum C/R badge which ada a 5 digit number starting with a number “1.” Prior the 1966, the C/R and M/M badges were coded by division with the IND staring with number 1, BMT starting with number 3 and IRT starting with number 6. I Imagine the reason my badge started with a 1 even though I was BMT was that the merger of the BMT and IND was expected sooner than it actually happened and coupled with the expected integration of the rosters of all the divisions, the separate numbering series became less important. When I got my M/M’s badge after the BMT and IND merged into the B Division, my number started with a 7. In true BMT tradition however, and I considered myself more BMT than IND even though I was vacation relief I never wore my badge at all when on duty.

At first, I thought this was a typical heypaul thread, but then I read the article and saw it was truly deadly serious.

Yes, this is among the reasons why ZPTO is completely unworkable in NYC, and OPTO can only work on 240-300 ft. trains- and even then, I think it's iffy.

Without getting into politics, that's easier said than done in a metropolis like NYC.

Here and now it is unlikely. I wonder how we compare to Tokyo in that regard; it's even more densely packed than NYC and older.

Well, it just happened that the conductor was in the same car as the fume odor. Had it been in another car, the conductor would not have known. In any case, anyone not wishing for a Darwin award would get the H out when they smell gasoline in any enclosed space, much less one carrying 600 volts and a dozen motors.

I suspect that whomever did this has a history of hostility to the world around them. People like that can always find some way to express their destructiveness. You can't make the world childproof, much less adult-proof.

The dense crowds help, too crowded for bullshit. Also, combined with a culture of criminal / insane / antisocial behavior = shame upon your entire family and shunning of everyone with your family name from any social or economic status... yeah.

FWIW, London and Brussels has had actual bombs go off on their train within recent history, and they're still using OPTO.

See... you get rid of the gate agents and anybody can walk in with whatever they are carrying.

They should have TSA agents at every turnstile inspecting everybody who comes in,.
