VIDEO: 72nd St (B) & (C) Train Station (Enhanced Station Initiative)

Posted by Transportation Hub on Sat Oct 13 22:35:46 2018

72nd Street (IND Eighth Avenue Line) is back in full operation after being closed for 6 months for renovation as part of the Enhanced Station Initiative (ESI) program. The station reopened last week Friday . It features new entrances with LED info screen, ceramic artwork “SKY” by Yoko Ono , and new gateway entrances. The station is located in the neighborhood of the Upper West Side of Manhattan on Central Park West. Out of all of the rehabilitated stations in Manhattan, this one is the most disappointing. Once again, there’s no USB ports on the side of the LCD info screens, some sections of the downtown platform was boarded up as well as the 71st entrance of the station. Lastly, this tour can’t be complete without some subway action. Please enjoy the station tour.

It is disappointing for me as an IND buff, because those small squared "72" tiles near the ceiling on the uptown platform were removed, but a good many of them were retained on the downtown platform though. Plus, at least the station kept those ">-72->" directional tiles, underneath the large mosaic tablets, keeping in the spirit of the IND itself.

Oh, well...I preferred 163rd Street-Amsterdam Avenue better though.

Great video though, by the way, and thanks for posting and sharing!

I'm guessing that the reason the small "72" tiles were removed from the upper level but not the lower is that ALL the wall tiles on the upper level were replaced, while only some on the bottom level were - those on the lower portion of the wall. This appears to be the case from the views from this video.
