Young vendor dies between SEPTA cars

Posted by Joe on Mon Sep 24 18:23:05 2018

Apparently, this accident happened Sunday afternoon, 9.23.2018. A group of three was selling candy, and a 7-year-old fell between cars, on a southbound Broad Street train.

Does SEPTA lock the doors on 67-foot cars? Does New York MTA?

If it was on tangent track, it would not matter if the cars were 50' or 75'. Crossing cars between two anti-climbers is dangerous.

I see the family had a press conference already and is pointing the blame at SEPTA among other things. How about you don't let your little child sell candy on a moving subway train! Bad parenting 101!

SEPTA will likely pay for not locking the storm doors, regardless of whatever any signs say.

dumb! A 7 yr old should not have been doing that--negligence, contributing to the deliquency of a minor. I learned how at age 11.

It's always someone else's fault, whether it's reckless conduct, unsupervised kids or a boy practicing scare the adults with a replica gun like Mom used to jack up local stores with.

I read of a case where tween kids, old enough to know better, went through/over a high fence topped with barbed wire, past warning signs, then climbed on top of parked railcars in overhead wire territory. Then they went to reach for the wire.
Going past one obstacle, sure kids will do that. Barbed wire? DANGER signs, then go check out high voltage? Did those parents even teach the kids the word No? Lawsuit followed, responsibility was thrown to the railroad (and in effect the public). Parents made bank.

CTA does not lock storm doors or prohibit crossing between cars and even though the NYCTA prohibits crossing, the doors are not locked except on the 75 ft cars (and the 67 ft cars when they operate).

I beg to dissent. On my most recent trip to Chicago (this month) I specifically saw signage prohibiting using the end doorsto pass between cars.

That must be recent since the last time I was there.

FWIW, I think such signage was in place 5 years ago when I was there. I know my Chicago host warned me not to cross from car to car--somethingboth of us would have done decades ago when I lived tyhere.

Everything is dangerous, it's all relative. Crossing between cars just takes slightly more common sense and skill than say crossing a street. But it's still easily doable.

IAWTP. Potential dangers can be avoided by prohibiting everyone from going anyplace or doing anything, but it wouldn’t be a good idea.
