A new free transfer point is opened between the uptown platform of the IRT Lexington Avenue Line and the Broadway-Lafayette Street station of the IND 6th Avenue Line.

It amazes me that it took so long to provide the Lexington and 6th Avenue line transfer at Broadway-Lafayette when the unfinished passageways were there since 1940.

The problem was that the northbound #6 platform was hundreds of feet north of Bway-Lafayette. It had to be extended south to meet the IND platform.

From what I saw during construction it wasn't an unfinished passageway, it was a fully functional entrance from the street. There is a staircase on the north side of Houston on Mulberry that had the original IND tile when it was exposed and I had the feeling that the entrance in front of the Puck Building/REI was also always there below the sidewalk as it just appeared one day. From the platform you could also see the original lighting and tiles.

I don't know when it was closed, but probably due to low usage. Broadway Lafayette used to be one of the creepiest stations due to the tiled pillars, the fare control in the center of the mezzanine with the entrances far apart, the three levels, the construction of Chrystie St. Oh, saying that makes me think they closed that entrance for the construction. That is very possible.

I don’t recall that exit/entrance ever being open till the transfer to the IRT was completed. By the way, one of the stories I heard about the reason the N/B platform of the IRT Bleecker St station was not initially extended south was that there was a gas station with its tanks in the path of a possible extension and its owner refused to move even though the TA was willing to pay for it.

I remember hearing that story as well. I do remember the gas station being there when I was growing up.
