How hard is it to lay 13 miles of track above ground, on nearly flat territory in an existing right-of-way?OK, make that "How hard is it in the rest of the world." |

There was no room on the ROW for a third track; it had to be built from scratch by buying up adjacent property. Lots of local opposition to this and some still remains. And it sure is counting one's chickens to say that a project that has just broken ground a couple of weeks ago will be finished "more than a year ahead of schedule" (estimated to open by 2022, for now and only costing $265 million per mile). |

Its not like putting down track for a model railroad. This project required LIRR to: Rebuild a number of grade crossings Make major adjustments to signals and switches Make adjustments to communications systems Install new third rails as needed and make adjustments to electrical substations Build two new platforms (Wyandanch and Pinelawn) Build new station building (Wyandanch) Grade the right-of-way and install ballast and drainage prior to track laying Test all of the new equipment before it is open for public use Do much of the work while trains are running on the adjacent, active track, ensuring that passengers and train workers are safe. Its not as easy as it looks. Lots of small, detailed tasks, all of which must be done carefully to ensure that no one is injured or worse. |

Second, in many spots, while there was room for a second track, it was necessary to grade for the track, etc. Not to mention signalling and electrical work. Not to mention actual laying of the track. Grade crossing widening and upgrades. All being done while trying minimum disruption to existing trains on the other track. |

As usual, the governor is banging his drum loudly because there is little applause. The 2nd track project having been completed a year early is less meaningful because the M-9 project in not a year ahead of schedule, too. Until the M-9s are delivered and put into service we'll see very minimal service improvements beyond being able to run around a stalled train until they have the rolling stock they need. I wonder what the governor can do about that. |

The equipment is laying in Ronkonkoma yard. There is no excuse why they can't run reverse-peak with it. They can leave the few M-3 consists (and there were all of 3 of them there over this weekend) can stay behind.M-9's will not be additional rolling stock for some years to come, only to replace M-3's. |

Why did the LIRR promise reverse peak and half hour service upon completion of DOUBLE track, not the Main Line West triple track, now would like us all to forget it ?Look at the schedules they had up until a year or so ago. There was some half-hourly service. That is gone. It is a de facto service cut for the bloated operating budget. Over-staffed trains and poor equipment utilization for their schedules. |

True.Port Washington and the Babylon line get half hourly service (sometimes thrice hourly weekdays) with double track and the occasional, temperamental M-3. It may be the LIRR's internal excuse, but it's not a valid excuse. The Port Jeff has an abandoned passing track and platform at Greenlawn and 10 or 12 car platforms for the stillborn electrification project with at best 8 car diesel trains. The LIAR told us 20 years ago dual-modes were "same as electrification". Of course they lied. The Port Jeff and South Shore get 2 such per rush hour each way and no reversion of Ronkonkoma Line ridership back to them. |

Having an extra track at least makes additional service possible. If not this administration, a future administration might add the service. They won't have the excuse that there's "insufficient trackage". It's really quite silly, IMO for a mainline rail branch to be single-tracked.Even if it's not used to its full potential, I don't see it as a bad thing that it's there. Perhaps someday soon, it will be fully utilized. |
