Not a Darwin. Darwins have to be "excellent" (highly unique) in nature, where the recipient displayed "an astounding lapse of judgment".

Also, Darwin Award recipients don't have to die; the recipient can survive, but just be sterilized (unable to reproduce, thus removed from the gene pool).

Two brothers. Wonder if they were drunk. Would have been even worse for the parents if they lost both sons.

Tragically stupid. How many times does this have to happen before the idiots realize that 'train surfing' is a potentially fatal stunt.

Way back around 1966 when I was in catholic grammar school an older kid (6th grade?) was killed 'hopping' a freight train when he brushed against the catenary on the then-electrified LIRR Bay Ridge branch.

But even that didn't stop local morons from hopping the freight trains.

They must think catenary runs on household outlet current.

What's funny is like a decade later, that story was still around the neighborhood! The Bay Ridge line was on 61st Street where I grew up but we all heard further down the line in the Flatbush area it happened.

I believe rail related mishaps are expressly excluded from Darwin Award consideration.

Doofus thought process doesn't work along the same logic as sentient humans. I recall reading of one doofus who convinced his girlfriend that it was OK to cross tracks in 3rd rail territory because "The 3rd rail is only on when the train's on top of it".

Now, HOW is that accomplished? Do you see a series of train detectors and huge trackside relays, some smoking and chuffing out sparks (cuz that's too many outdoor fixtures to maintain 100%) every time a train goes by? Do you see crews get out and reset those when either the detector or the mongo-current relay fails?
yes I know there's a European streetcar system that actually does this, but that's a) recent b) far from a commuter rail system c) nowhere in the USA and d only us nerds even know it exists

No, Doofus runs on "whatever bull chit I can get someone to believe". When convenient, they believe their own bull, then it's "NotMyFaultIDontKnowNothin". Fortunately, girlfriend in that case wasn't wearing a party dress and heels, and didn't trip over a rail, ballast or other obstacle, at least not that day.

There was a videographer who was hosting some NYU film students (maybe the project was "Can our stupidity burn a hole to China?") who decided to set up a man-lift crane next to the overhead lines. He decided that the power lines HAD TO be phone lines because they were "insulated". More like "because I feel like setting up the crane here", way closer than the legal min clearance from power lines.

The lift was being used for filming, and various cables were routed on and around the mini-crane including some going several hundred feet, including some to the camera one of the NYU dippies was holding. Kid never knew what hit him, but it hurt. Probably 13,000 volts, he was bleeding out of his mouth. DOA.
The lift rental place explicitly warns about power lines, there's even a sticker on the lift. But of course, "film director" claimed "Not My Fault".

That's weird. The incident I referred to happened around Ocean Parkway. It's 50 years ago but I vaguely remember that they told us his body was laying on top of a freight car and people in the apartment buildings along the ROW called the police. I don't know if the freight trains had 2-way radios on that decrepit stretch but the train wasn't stopped until it was somewhere in East New York or maybe even in Queens. The cops probably had to get on the ROW and flag it down.

It could have been around there. I'm not sure specifically where they said it happened, but by the time me and my friends ran around those tracks, the overhead wire was already down and we will always want about the story of the kid on top of the car and he touched the wire and got killed

Moreover, stupidity involving trains is specifically disqualified for Darwin Awards, because of its ubiquity, believe it or not!

The foolishness that stays with me is the story of the two Princeton students who thought it would be fun to have sex on top of the Dinky that laid up overnight on the campus. Other kids crossing the Green said the flash was visible all the way to the Science Building almost half a mile from the station.

It was ruled Not A Darwin, though. (Stupidity involving trains is disqualifying, due to ubiquity.)

Depends. If it involves "excellence", there's a chance. Train surfing, no chance, though.

If rail casualties are excluded from the Darwins, perhaps we could establish a similar rail-only award: the Huskisson, named for William Huskisson, who was run down by Stephenson’s Rocket on the opening day of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway.
