The Train of Many Metals (6/13/2018).

Posted by William A. Padron on Wed Jun 13 14:45:02 2018

Just to let you all know that I had seen R-10 type museum subway car #3184, along with the other post-WWII model units (R-16 #6387 and R-38's #4028-4029) to be used in the "Parade of Trains" for 2018 during this weekend (June 16-17) at Brighton Beach.

It was being road tested on the "F"/"G" line this morning (Wednesday, June 13), and on its way to Coney Island Yard. It will all be ready, plus with the other vintage museum cars to be operated at this event.

Oh, WOW! I am so ready and looking forward to be there!!!

And the slanted R-40's #4280-4281 has been added to the consist, so it will be a six-car "Train of Many Metals", due to "popular demand" (perhaps) as posted on the NYTM web page, plus on Facebook too. So, it looks like it will definitely run along the stretch between Brighton Beach and Kings Highway on the Brighton.

But...

It was sporting its side roll signs (one side visible) for the "A", and between 207th Street and Lefferts Boulevard. However, they were from the 1988 printed rollers though.

Yes, it was, for this year, as the R-11 is at the TM right now, coupled to the R-42's #4572-4573. Also, R-1/9's #1300-100-1575 are also at the TM as well, while the other ones including car #1000 were at 207th Street Yard.

It was operating over the original D/Culver routing.

No excuse. There's only route one sign for the immortal R-10s: A.

Actually, in the late 1950s, quite a few R-10s showed up on the AA/BB lcl service and don’t forget their time on the BMT Eastern where they carried the 14. 15, and 16 route numbers. In fact, considering how the NYCTA wanted to tout its soon to be established through service to Coney Island via the Culver, the agency could very well have assigned the R-10s to the D instead of the A as a showcase line.

Agreed. But since their initial assignment was the A, they became synonymous with that line. That's how I'll always remember them, anyway.

IIRC the R-38s were originally intended for the D.

In addition to the other trivia, I had heard that the R-32s were originally intended for the iND Queens lines but the ended up going the BMT Southern instead.

Those R-1/9s in Jamaica Yard must have been in bad shape by 1964.

Quickie tidbits on the R-10 at this year's "Parade of Trains" (June 16-17, 2018)

1. The car rides fine, but it operates with a pair of R-32 trucks. So, it is not noisy and not loud at all to ride, and brakes operate OK with no squealing and no flat wheels.

2. The car has a different sounding air compressor, like an R-16 to R-22 (mostly likely a WABCO A-2 or A-3, not its original A-1).

3. All side doors (except one leaf at the end that was cut out) open and close in sync with the other cars in the TOMM (R-16/40/38) with no time release delay.

4. All fans and the lights do work.

I took a total of 12 round trips inside #3184 (six on Saturday, an six on Sunday). And so it goes...
