FOTOS - Hartford Line

Posted by Fred G on Sun Jun 17 16:37:40 2018

Prior to opening day, I had a chance to photograph the Hartford Line during its testing/rehearsal period prior to the grand opening yesterday 06-16-18.

They also pressed McGinness geep 6696 into service although it will likely stay on Shore Line East until it too is rebuilt and repainted:

Leaving Hartford with a set of SLE coaches. After moonlighting on the Hartford, it had to return to SLE.

Newington Junction. This is part of the stretch where Amtrak trains can run at 110 mph.

At rest at Hartford Yard, where the NHV to HFD trains lay up before heading south again.

Some fun facts:

The newly painted engines are nicknamed "Coke Zero"
The newly wrapped coaches are ex MBTA MBB coaches, and are leased by CT
Some of the leased coaches have bathrooms but since they are not ADA compliant, the bathrooms can't be used until they are brought up to code, even though the DOT has promised to do so by next year.
The MBTA coaches are rated for top speed of 80 mph but Amtrak can go faster as they're upped the speed limit in spots so Amtrak can go 110.

Thank you Bill!

Lunch around the train station in Hartford is kind of spare. There’s a Subway and a Dunkin’ Donuts in the basement of the station where it meets the bus station. Also in the south part of the station building there is a somewhat pricey taco/Mexican place. After that you have to walk east several blocks to get to the actual nuts and bolts downtown of Hartford where you have pricey eateries other than fast food.
I think a better option for lunch would be New haven, where you could exit the train at State Street station and walk a few blocks westerly on Chapel Street and you’ll find a variety of stuff: both chains like Chipotle and Halal guys and also mom-and-pop restaurants.

I haven’t made hartford a meal destination in a long time. Several years ago there was both a diner and a pizza joint across the street from the train station and they’ve long ago shut down.

Do you know what it's like around the Springfield station? I will be checking out this line in early July when I have a few days off.

Not pretty but not crime infested and there are places to eat and get coffee and stuff within a couple three blocks of the station. The station itself has been revamped and is pretty decent. The platform area is still the same old grungy low level platform area that it has been for years.

Great shots, Fred G. Nice seeing you at Yankee Station-161st Street a few weeks ago. Those Amtrak shots came out great.
I did the Hartford Line today. I feel for the conductors. Imagine having to manually open & close doors at each end of every car, at each station! In this day & age; what the Hell were they (MBTA) thinking when these cars were ordered!
My train actually hit 90+ on the n/b trip to Hartford. Some nice high speed rolling through there.
Some cars had crappy to NO a/c. With the overcrowding, schedules were difficult to maintain. People were told they had to either stand or wait for another train. Waiting was not an option for me. I stood. We were allowed to stand in the vestibules, and the car with the flat wheel provided for extra special effects.
Things got so bad that one train had to be coupled to another to accommodate all the crowds. Then, at every station down to NH the train had stop TWICE, once for the front section, once for the rear section.
And of course, no toilets.
Not a way to win over potential customers.

As we know, the only reliable stats are for homicides.

Springfield about 15 homicides in a city of 150K.

ESL about 35 homicides in a city of 35K. Comparable to Los Cabos, Caracas, and Acapulco, which are on top of the worldwide list. Twice Baltimore's rate.

(NYC about 300 in a city of 8 million.)

ESL is pretty hard to match.

Today will be the real test when it goes into service as a commuter railroad. I agree it wasn’t a great showing yesterday but to be fair free train rides on Father’s Day Is going to result in overflow crowds.
