The "Chamber of Horrors" Station To Be Fixed At Last?!?

Posted by William A. Padron on Fri May 25 17:51:54 2018

Is there any hope that the Chambers Street station on the BMT "J"/"Z" line will finally be overhauled and repaired?!? Hmmm, possibly...

It is going to take a lot rat traps and poison, but they'll probably run off to Canal Street. They are not stupid animals

I wonder if the station will close temporary while this work is going on but let me say that finally this station will get overhaul.

It's going to be interesting to see what the finished station will look like. I guess we'll see that solitary closed platform walled up ?

Now - trains look better - stations look worse.
I'd expect them to do a Canal Street-like cover up of the abandoned platform.

That's probably all we will get for now. Some of those water and sewer pipes date back to 1913, or before. The station has been altered several times for the Brooklyn Bridge el connector, the Municipal archive storage, and...??? That station will need a LOT of work to fix the leaks and stop the crumbling.

I doubt it'll ever be properly fixed up.

Although if the MTA started doing extensive renovations, I'd expect they'd try to connect the terminal/relay track on the southbound platform to the northbound track south of the station, then close the northbound platform entirely.

I hope they don't wall up the side platform - mosaics & the bridge picture-tablet (not correct terminology) will be gone from view. They should be landmarked, like the rest of the tilework/mosaics throughout the system.
And, the unused platform adds a bit of visual history to the station. It doesn't interfere with RR operations, and could be used as an extra platform if a situation makes it necessary.

So, they'll wall it up and put re-done faux tilework up similar to the wall of the downtown local track at Brooklyn Bridge? Sad.

I have a suspicion that that is why it hasn't yet been renovated.

They should extend the platforms to 10 cars as a sortof future proofing while they're at it.

Exactly!

That would be one of the FIRST things I would do, extend it to allow for 10 car trains.

This would also allow if a G.O. were necessary from 6th Avenue trains to do the old switchover as was done in 1982-'83 such trains to stop at Chambers.

Well, first, you have to believe the Post. Then you would have to believe that repairs *are* possible at all, what with sewers and maybe a river (of sorts) above the station, repairs would have to be made to properties that are not under MTA control.

Of course cleaning those tiles is easy, if they wanted to do it. They *are* tiles after all. Twenty people on a "Windex-Train" could come in each evening, and after a week or two that station could just sparkle.

Offer the empty platform to a private concern to build a fancy restaurant there. Some glass windows at the platform edge and you could do something nice with it, and earn rent besides.

The difference in levels is too great. By the way, the relay track can’t be extended to hold a 600 ft train since it ends right at the east wall of the IRT 7 Av subway. If the platform were to be extended, the relay track will probably be abandoned much like the "Penn Pocket” west of Exchange Pl on the PATH

H-m-m-m-m, I wonder if the original porcelain signs were just left on these columns (assuming they were the platform columns), if so, just need to clean off the layers of dust, steel dust, and grit, and mount one or two somewhere in Chambers St. station - and if more, mount the others in the transit museum.

Yes, I'd imagine that to be on their minds. Loss of turnback capability there would be a silly move- whenever there's trouble on 6th Avenue or Queens Blvd, the M has to go there. And even in the Brave New World of all CBTC, this is NYC, and there's guaranteed to be trouble of some kind or another.
