New York City Transit Authority
IRT and IND Divisions

A free transfer point opened today between the southbound platform (only) of the Bleecker Street Station on the IRT Lexington Avenue Line and the Broadway-Lafayette Street Station of the IND 6th Avenue Line. When the platforms were extended at the Bleecker Street Station to accommodate longer trains the northbound platform was extended north and the southbound platform was extended south and this resulted in the unusual free transfer arrangement.

A free transfer to and from the northbound IRT platform finally opened on September 25, 2012.

I was exactly six months old when that transfer at Bleecker St. opened. Supposedly all they had to do was bash an opening through one of the IND mezzanine walls.

After the World's Fair had closed some 7 months before, ridership on the remaining section of the 2nd Ave el began its decline. Mon-Sat service was scaled back about 3 hours in the evenings and lightly used Sunday service was eliminated completely. A little more than a year later, the 2nd Ave el would be gone completely.

I assume that meant that there was no direct east side service to Queens after that. Was that the same time that the paper transfer was established between the 3 Av el and the IRT Queensboro lines at Gr/Cent?

The northbound platform at Bleeker St., as well those as Canal St., Spring St., and Astor Pl., were not extended until the early 1960s, when they were was extended northward.

And when they finally built the northbound transfer to the 6, they re-opened the other IND mezzanine that existed unused on the other side of Lafayette St. The two staircases to the street were existing staircases that were retiled. I saw the complex from above and below and it was a standard IND mezzanine, with incandescent lights, before they started the work.

It was probably intended to have a transfer to the IRT at some point even though prior to unification it would have been outside the fare controls. The Canal St complex on the BMT was built with a transfer to the IRT in much the same way, sort of convenient but at an extra fare.
