That could be accurate since there appears to be a home ball at danger in the distance, so it’s some sort of interlocking.

That's the only one I know of. All the others had the original R-27/30 curtain signs.

Actually, the R-27/30s received new route signs with bullets and end destination signs like the IRT redbirds got. The GOH R-30s definitely got them as well as the few R-27s that got the redbird treatment.

It's from the west end of the Flushing-bound platform at 74 St.

The incline from 69 St up to 74 St is clear in the photo. The interlocking and track diverge at Woodside would appear a lot closer from 69 St.

ALL R27/30s received those rollsigns that you are describing sometime around '84 or '85 before any GOH or repainting of any kind.

I'm well aware of that. The R-27/30 featured in that pic had the color sign in the destination sign box, like the R-16, 23, & 38.

This may be an anomaly of sorts.

For those of you who remember the artist’s renderings of the R-40s, they seemed to show destination displays under the large route letter, something which was eliminated from the final design.

Considering that the R-27/30s were maintained at CIYd among other places, the car probably needed a roll sign and a car maintainer installed whatever was available.

I don’t remember that one. The renderings I saw had the destination below the letter and no pantograph gates. Either design would have been better than the final result.

This is the image I remember from the back of the 1966 subway map. It shows "Queens Plaza" as the destination written above the large E as though they were on the same sign, not two different scrolls.

Considering how the side signs were, it may have been the intent to have the route and destination on the same scroll. Around that time the buses had single piece roll signs containing both the route number and the destination.

Growing up in Rego Park and using the Q60 (Green Bus), which always had split route and destination signs, when I first saw a TA bus in Flushing with a single sign (and no Q in the route number), I thought that was a stupid design, because you couldn't possibly have all the destinations listed for all the routes. The split design made the most sense.

Then the R40s came with the same design flaw, which lasted until the R62s. (Young folks here may not recall that the R44s and R46s came with those same one-piece side signs, before they were replaced by the yellow electric signs.)

Nice pictures. I'm so glad you posted that picture of the R32s on the M. I was just telling someone on this board about a week ago that the R32s operated regularly on all three lines of the Eastern Division in the '80s although I was thinking from '83-'85).

Love the pic of Forest Avenue, with the old El platform lights.

Also, the "white birds" zooming through Wall Street look to have no interior lighting ("dark cars"). Perhaps it was a deadhaead move- or maybe not!

A very small number of the “white birds” had illuminated ad cards like the high numbered R-32s and newer cars. The problem was that since the IRT had such a small number of them, the ad installers often only had conventional on translucent card to put in the cars cutting down on the little illumination there was anyhow.
