Excellent R-10's on the D-Brighton photos you had posted and shared. Thanks a lot, Bill!

For the record, I was able to ride a ten-car set of the R-10's on the "D" Brighton in regular service only once, despite having seen them a few times along 6th Avenue in Manhattan. It was on Independence Day, July 4, 1980 on a northbound run from Avenue U to 145th Street lower level, with #3207 as the lead north motor unit (and still having its blue doors/grey panels interior), #3330 as the rear south motor unit.

#3047 was NOT the only R-10 to have a R-16 storm door (that car collided with R-15 #5962 at 207th Street Yard in 1974). #3141 also received an R-16 storm door as well, as seen when it was painted green in service.

That's awesome that you have a photo of the unit with the R-16 storm door on the head end of the consist.

Thanks for sharing these treats.

Most likely.

I'm pretty sure it was closer to 1980 when the TA started restricting the R-46 to rush hours only, which made it necessary for the mass equipment shifting.

The R16 window had 2 round head set screws on the horizontal bar across. Sometimes the entire sash would be twisted sideways, but never remember the window open in the 1960's.

I think the R15 & 17 could open.

Since you got pics of them on the Brighton line express tracks... I assume it was a weekday. When they terminated at Brighton Beach (weekdays approx 6 AM to 8 PM) it was the Brighton Express. Other times it was the Brighton local terminating at Coney Island.

#6304, wrecked in 1970 at Roosevelt Avenue, may have been the R-16 car's storm door that was put on #3047. The wider IND-BMT R-16's storm door is not the same size as the narrower IRT R-17 though.

Yeah, the R-46 truck fiasco was in 1980. Any R-10's that showed up on the "D" in 1978 was most likely because as what was available at Concourse Yard, taking cars that were normally assigned to the rush hour "CC" back then.

It started in 1980 with the R44/46 equipment swap between the A,D,E,F; the R10 swap between the CC,E,F; and R32s placed on the E,F (don't know where those came from).

However IIRC the fallout from the Rockwell Truck fiasco continued in 1982 when the TA mothballed the entire R44 fleet from the A train, removed their trucks and temporarily placed them on the R46s. As a result, the TA pulled the R38s off of the D and placed them on the A train.

Also in the fall of 1980 they took a lot of the R 27/30s and R 38 off of the B West End and replace them with R40 slants. By 1981 until about 1988 the West End was almost all R40 Slants with the occasional R38 R32 and R 27/30

All the porthole windows could open as originally delivered, but the R-16 windows were mounted with the latch on the inside of the car on the lower half so that the lower portion of the window opened instead of the upper which was the case on the R-11s. 15s and 17s. For some reason, by the late 1950s, all the bulkhead door windows on the R-16s had been riveted shut.

The actual windows were the same size. You could actually see that the porthole on the R-16s appeared smaller in relation to the bulkhead door than the ones on the R-15s and 17s.

Interesting. I only rode on one R-10 D train myself, around 1978 or '79, up CPW (where else?) to 205th and back to 59th. Naturally, it ripped past local stop after local stop, even made good time on the Concourse express.

I'm not sure about 1988-89, but the West End B was about 100% Slants from 1990-98.

Then, they moved the Slants to the (Orange) Q, which was a part-time route. Some politician screamed that Slants and Redbirds had less-safe doors, so Slants spent the rest of their lives on part-time routes- Orange Q, Q-Diamond, and from 2004-2008, the W and Brighton B..

A few weeks in early 2009 to the A to get them to 207th for scrapping...

Some slants ended up at ENY Yard running between the J,L and M lines. Didn’t see them on the Z. Popped up on the N occasionally as well. While the Brighton Line skip-stop service was going on, that was the most I had ever seen R40s on the D and Q lines when they mostly served the A and B trains.

When the slants were transferred from the A to the West End they were beat to hell due to their long hours of service on the A because the R44's were so unreliable.

After GOH, they were amongst the best cars in the fleet.

I never rode one on the Brighton line because I was working 6 days a week at the bank at the time. Never saw one on a Sunday, but that certainly doesn't mean they didn't run, especially in the summer when the D ran extra weekend service when people would be beach bound.

When I got hired by transit, the only time I operated one on the D was a re-route. I was on a northbound green C from Euclid and they bought me into W.4th downstaits.I had time to change both front signs and enjoyed doing the express run to 145.

So that might explain exactly why the TA took the R40s from the A. The R40s were6always the back bone of the A whether the other cars were R38s, R44s or R46s.

They were often headed to Astoria via the W IIRC in the early 2000's.The unique slant made those cars seem more eye catching, espicially on that wide 90 degree turn coming out of QBP.

The R-30's never received a General Overhaul. Cars that did were sent up to Morrison-Knudsen, Sumitomo or in house at Coney Island.

The R-30's received a light overhaul and repaint. General Overhaul would receive new A/C, doors, windows and new ceiling.

If I recall, some of the R-36s also received an in house overhaul that was closer to what the R-30s got.

Never saw a Slant J before or after ...

Or, does it have to be "pure", on the A? Is that an R10 lover sort of thing I just don't understand? :) (just kidding)
