It may have been narrowed to a single track years after it was first opened because of clearance problems. The same thing was done to the Erie Long Dock Tunnel in Jersey City, which is still in use. |

NIMBY: I believe that the entire Edgewater Branch was built as a double track line but was converted to single track at some later date. (1950/60?). As the size of freight cars increased it was not uncommon to single track the tunnel and center the remaining track for high and wide loads. I'm basically curious if a double track tunnel would fit any of the existing types of rail cars that NJT is currently running, especially the MLVs, and if it could be done under wire |
