How many tracks wide was the Edgewater Tunnel?

Posted by NIMBYkiller on Mon Mar 12 17:53:49 2018

The evidence I'm finding shows it was 2 tracks wide at the western portal and 1 track wide at the eastern portal. Is this correct and, if so, at what point did it go from 2 tracks to 1 track?

Don't know about narrowing to a single track.

Here's a pic of the Fairview portal from Weird NJ.

And I saw a railroad.net picture of an NYSW train exiting the eastern portal with only 1 track that looked to be centered.

It may have been narrowed to a single track years after it was first opened because of clearance problems. The same thing was done to the Erie Long Dock Tunnel in Jersey City, which is still in use.

That's another possibility. There's gotta be some diagram somewhere showing the dimensions

NIMBY:

I believe that the entire Edgewater Branch was built as a double track line but was converted to single track at some later date. (1950/60?).

As the size of freight cars increased it was not uncommon to single track the tunnel and center the remaining track for high and wide loads.

The West Shore Fort Montgomery Tunnel is an example of this.

Does that book give the dimensions of the tunnel by any chance? I'm basically curious if a double track tunnel would fit any of the existing types of rail cars that NJT is currently running, especially the MLVs, and if it could be done under wire

No it doesn't. I don't know the actual dimensions.

Alright, thank you for your info anyway! At least I know width wise it was originally designed for 2 tracks
