NIMBY:

I believe that the entire Edgewater Branch was built as a double track line but was converted to single track at some later date. (1950/60?).

As the size of freight cars increased it was not uncommon to single track the tunnel and center the remaining track for high and wide loads.

The West Shore Fort Montgomery Tunnel is an example of this.
