Tuscarora Almanac - February 12, 1907 - The Book of First Runs

A northbound platform is finally opened at 130th Street Station on the 9th Avenue El. There had been a southbound platform at this location since 1893.

Buses replace streetcars on the Broadway-7th Avenue Line and the Columbus & Lenox Avenues Line. The Broadway-7th Avenue line began running on May 26, 1864 as a horse drawn streetcar. The Columbus Avenue route dates back to 1892. Trolley service had been run by New York Railways. Bus service will be provided by New York City Omnibus as Routes 6 and 7 respectively.

Tuscarora Almanac - February 12, 1973 - The Book of Wrecks

New York City Transit Authority - IND Division

There was a major collision on the southbound express track (B-3) of the IND South Brooklyn Line just north of Church Avenue Station between two empty trains. A ten car train composed of R-1/9's struck a train of R-40's. The consist of the R-1/9 train was (s) 1236, 1105, 1128, 1183, 1324, 1077, 1188, 1254, 1416 and 1155.The consist of the R-40 train was (s) 4306-07, 4181-80, 4317-16, 4264-65 and 4421-20.
R-40 4420 was badly damaged and reportedly was cut up on the spot. R-6 1236 was badly damaged and will be scrapped as 754.

Tuscarora Almanac - February 12-13, 1977 - The Book of Last Runs

This is the last day of passenger service on the Lexington Avenue Line
between Bowling Green and South Ferry. The last northbound #5 Lexington Avenue Express left South Ferry (Outer Loop) in the evening of February 12 about 11 PM. The consist was
(n) R-33 8972-3, R-22 7736, R-28 7938-7921.

The "SS" Bowling Green Shuttle then began its usual overnight run but this night the run
would be cut short. The final shuttle left from Bowling Green to South Ferry (Inner Loop) at 12:04 AM. It departed from South Ferry at 12:10 AM arrived back at Bowling Green one minute later. The train consisted of two R-12's (n) 5705 and 5704.

Can anyone say with certainty - given previous almanacs (whether Tuscarora here or BusChat, or my own Almanacs, past and future, on BusChat) about the various modifications to (M)7's route, and some posts relating thereto - at what point its transition point from Sixth Avenue (post-MaBSTOA) was shifted from 53rd Street (to which it had been moved in 1957) to 59th Street/Central Park North on its way to Columbus Circle and then Broadway?

Would this qualify for the book of wrecks. Back in February '78 I was on a move off of 77 track in C I Yard. 1181 was the North motor. I left following all procedures. R46 equipment. Lost brakes entering the spur at A Tower. At 41/2 MPH. They claimed I was speeding. Investigation turned out it was computer failure and I was exonerated.

Interesting. Two years to the day after the FACL strike that ended their run, and several months after the last (to that point) run of conversions.

You have to remember prior to the opening of the uptown platform at BG, you had a different main entrance and it was a mezzanine from what I have seen between the two platforms at street level inside the fare zone.

That's one reason I would look at doing the necessary work to revive the shuttle ONLY during times when there are no trains on the (4) and (5) going to Brooklyn AND you can't extend the (6) to oid SF (with the (5) going to old SF when not going to Brooklyn and the (6) extended there outside of weekdays).

One problem though...

Both the outer and inner loop platforms at South Ferry have been sealed off to the public, and covered up (as seen from the mezzanine at the new station) with doors only accessible by authorized personnel only.

So, no BGSF shuttle or extended #4/#5/#6 service into SF in the future. And so it goes...

I still think they should revive Lexington Avenue service to South Ferry. Just use the Outer Loop. Send the 5 there when it's not going to Brooklyn (2 during the current weekend GOs), reincarnate the shuttle all other times.

The problem with doing that is the reason that the new station was built for the west side had to do with handicapped accessibility and if the old platform were reopened, it would still have the same issues. Even if that issue were to be corrected, it would then beg the question as to why money was wasted on a new station when the old one could probably have been extended northbound without much difficulty and at less expense.

Those could easily be unsealed if the BG-SF shuttle is revived on the outer loop (which is obviously what would be used since transfer points to the (R) were developed there when that was pressed back into service after Sandy.

Such would the one and only transfer point between the (1) and the Lexington lines if it were ever done.

I don't see any half way decent ridership for transit to justify the service. Even with OPTO, how to you crew up a line like that?

The t/o can't go back and forth for 8 hours w/o a break. He needs a little break after 2 hours for a comfort, time for lunch around the 4th hour and another comfort break 2 hours after lunch. Who relieves him? Deadheading a man from the TSQ/GCT shuttle 3 times a shift is not productive. Supposed there is a service delay on the Lex making it impossible for him to travel to and fro? A TSS to make the relief is not practical because he may be tied up on something else.

A work program allowing for periodic comfort reliefs and lunch reliefs could easily be generated. I used to do it all the time for various GOs. What could be done is to make the shuttle OPTO with a single T/O changing ends during non peak periods to allow the other T/O to take lunch and comfort breaks. As A M/M I worked the Culver shuttle for a week and even though it wasn’t OPTO, there were 2 M/M to minimize stand time during the rush hour after which each M/M took lunch. The problem now is that the shuttle platform at B/Grn can only hold 2 cars, so dedicated sets of whatever rolling stock the MTA would want to assign there would have to be assembled.

Could they use a three-car set like two of the 42nd St. shuttle trains, to reduce the variety of special sets? Two cars could platform, with the south car locked?

The real purpose of reviving the shuttle (which would be 5:30 AM-8:00 PM weekdays only) is for nights and weekends, when the (6) would be extended to old SF, joined by the (5) when the (5) is NOT running to Brooklyn. Biggest benefit of this is doubling late-night service between BB and BG and increasing service between those stations evenings and weekends to an area that has seen a many times-fold jump in residential living since the shuttle was discontinued in early 1977 (Battery Park City for example did not exist at the time the shuttle was discontinued).

Old South Ferry Station

As I remember, the old station was modified some for ADA when it was reopened while the new one was rebuilt post-Sandy.

No it wasn't. TA ran a shuttle bus (lightly used) to the next ADA accessible No. 1 stop (Chambers Street) when they reopened the old South Ferry Terminal to address ADA concerns.

Trains arriving from So/Fy loop on the N/B tk can’t access the shuttle tk so even if the outside loop were used it would still have to be a single track operation.

According to my research and discussions on this forum, prior to the mid-1970's renovation (meaning the installation of the uptown platform, lower level mezzanine, etc.) the main entrance and only entrance of the Bowling Green station IS THE CURRENT HEAD HOUSE that was opened in 1905 that next to Battery Park.

While there was a lower level passageway from the main center platform between the uptown and Brooklyn bound tracks, the lower level passageway only connected to the shuttle platform - NOT TO A SEPARATE ENTRANCE OR EXIT.

The mid-1970's renovation of the Bowling Green station did indeed create a much better subway station.

I thought that Head House was closed when the uptown platform opened in 1978, while the main entrance became the entrance closer to 2 Broadway.

I thought the transfer tunnel to the R was accessible, and therefore the elevators were reachable. Or was the issue the gapfillers, even though they're more flush with the train than any normal platform?

I meant between the 1905 platform and the accessible 2009 mezzanine. The R platforms were never accessible.
