The mechanics of getting it done would be interesting, to say the least...

I've seen regular motor vehicles outfitted with steel wheels so that somehow you lower one set of wheels or the other, and it can run on rails or on the road. I guess they could do the same with the Google van if Google and the railroads were both willing.

Simpler, outfit a flatcar with the streetview equipment and request it run as a tail car on a freight train.

now if that works i suppose the question of whether a railroad r.o.w. is considered a "public highway" would come up. if owned by a private company they obviously posess the private property...but it's in plain sight to everyone else.

i'm no lawyer but my gut feeling is no, they can't legally prevent anyone from viewing the property. however, street view is showing the pedestrian pov...and walking the tracks is illegal.

maybe the railroads would offer a pay-per-view product.

Wouldn't that be "Track-View"? That is, except for street-running rails.

And Google would have to get permission from the railroad companies, since those are private property and/or government property depending on the system.

Interestingly enough, you can get a "street view" of Kilauea's Iki Crater, which was full of red-hot lava back in 1959 when an eruption occurred there.

It's similar to why Google stops short of entering some communities where the roads are privately owned.

To do such a thing would violate Googles deal with using local independent contracts. The logistics wouldn't work.

and it would interest nobody except for railways, i got it. be cool though, a real world microsoft train simulator.

someone somewhere will do something similar with go-pro drones anyway. leads to another legal question: do railroads own the airspace above the tracks?

Depends on the locality and how high you are talking about. Plus a lot of drone issues haven't been ironed out yet all around.

But, are you going to violate some terrorism law for I wonder.
