Countdown clocks

Posted by jabrams on Mon Jan 1 11:27:09 2018

The Daily News today reported that countdown clocks are now working at 471 subway stations. I thought there were 472 stations, so what station is missing the clocks?

The more plausible explanation is that it’s an error and they think there are 471 stations.

Multiple stations are closed for construction at the moment, and have been since before the countdown clocks were installed. Probably one of them.

The MTA has never removed Cortlandt Street on the 1 from any of the counts, even after being closed for 17 years.

Do terminals really need countdown clocks?

It's not clear they have effective ones. I was at 205th Norwood recently, and the clock read 8 minutes until the train pulled into the station.

The ones for the 1 train at 242 are accurate. It helps to know how fast you have to run to get into the train.

Regarding Norwood, the clocks at terminals - aren't they only for outgoing trains? At 242, its only for them. Does Norwood have them for both directions?

A countdown clock at a terminal would also let the maintenance crew know how long it has to do its job.

They yanked the 7 from the SubwayTime. Earlier today I noticed it was continually refreshing with misleading information from the 7. Trains to Hudson Yards would appear in the Flushing-bound section, and it was refreshing with crazy times.

And the #7 countdown clocks are still in test mode, as they themselves say. And they're completely inaccurate. Tonight at Queensboro Plaza upper level, the clock said the next train would arrive in 3 minutes, and it said that as the train pulled in to the station.

Also, it says "Flushing - Mai" because there's no room for the n. (Actually there's plenty of room for the n if they shortened the minutes field.)

And the #7 clocks are a completely different design from the others, with each line numbered and the display in black.

Of course on the upper level at QP the N clock is next to the 7 track, and the 7 clock (a separate clock) is behind it and blocked from view and can't be seen unless you're right there, so most people won't notice the mis-information.

I suspect that's why most of the clocks have been installed in stupid positions, the least visible locations, so that no one will notice how bad they are.

The Flushing could be abbreviated “Flshng” and it would still be understood.

There are third party apps that can get into the SubwayTime real time data like “Underway” on iOS. It is still viewable to track the (7) train, for now.
