Tuscarora Almanac - December 15, 1956 - The Book of First and Last Runs

The Bronx, New York
New York City Transit Authority – IRT Division

At 12:01 AM the first train of Steinway motor cars was placed in service on the 3rd Avenue El in The Bronx. The consist was composed of 4757, 5642, 4700, 4716, 5638 and 4768.

December 15, 1956 was a Saturday so it would seems that the entire fleet of about eleven trains was replaced in one day. This would not have been difficult as on a Saturday only about four train-sets were needed to cover the service.

The last train of IRT “elevated” cars consisted of MUDC motor cars; 1795, 1793,1754,1778,1761 and 1780.

The May 6, 1937 issue of Engineering News-Record showed a cross-section of the 34th Street station of the Sixth Avenue line as part of an article of the complexities of building that leg of the IND network. By then, the sidewalls' total thickness (from the face of the supporting steel frame to the sidewall surface) was 7½" - 2" for the foundation layer, 5½" finishing layer. (They had other such diagrams in that article - cross-sections of the tracks in-between the 42nd Street and 47th-50th Street - Rockefeller Center stations, cross-section of the transitions north of that station, etc.)

They continued to operate both type after service was cut back to 149th Street. The old time IRT guys saw to it that the final run would be made by IRT cars.

IIRC Mayor LaGuardia was on hand for the opening of the 6th Ave. line and 1208 was the lead motor of the inaugural train. A pity it was scrapped out of spite.
