Elevators at 57 St (N Q R W)?

Posted by gbs on Fri Oct 13 21:20:13 2017

I was taking by bike into Manhattan on the subway and wanted to exit at a station near Central Park with an elevator, so I checked the MTA website's Elevator and Escalator Status page. After selecting the borough, you can select the station from the drop-down menu. So I looked at the stations listed and chose 57 St - 7 Av (N Q R W).

The status report said "All elevators are in service" and "There are no escalators at this station" (which I knew). So I got off there and couldn't find any elevators. I ended up taking the next train to Times Square, whose elevators I have used before.

Then I noticed that on the train's FIND display there is no wheelchair symbol at 57 St, and later I checked the website's N and Q stripmaps and they also show no handicapped access at 57 St.

So why is 57 St - 7 Av listed in the dropdown menu for elevators and escalators? There are other trivial problems with the drop-down menus, but listing a station there that doesn't have either is a serious error.

There's an elevator from the street level to the mezzanine, but none from the mezzanine to the platforms. The MTA is preparing to build platform elevators though.

Why wouldn't they build them all together? How does one elevator to the mezzanine only help wheelchairs?

And they should indicate this on the status page, so those who really need access to the platforms are aware. That's what asterisks* are for.

MTA is doing it in two phases of getting the station ADA requirement. First phase was a piece of cake to get the street to mezzanine.

The mezzanine to platforms project at the time when they planned faced a lot obstacles getting a suitable location to construct the elevators. They been going through the design process more than 5 years. I believe they are in a processes to bid the projects out.

Yes, I've since seen it, on the south-west corner. I didn't see any sign at the elevator indicating that there is no platform access.

I'm pretty sure there is one.

Thanks for the photo. The signs on the elevator building say "57 Street Subway Station N Q R", implying that there is elevator access to those trains.

Is there another station anywhere that has an elevator only to the mezzanine and not also to the platform?

Yes, Briarwood Van Wyck:

That ADA symbol is misleading (at least it does not appear on the elevator at 57 St). As far as I know there are no immediate plans to install elevators from the mezzanine to the platforms at Briarwood.
