Video Underneath The Hell Gate Bridge On Randall's Island |

Posted by heypaul on Sat Oct 14 18:41:48 2017 I was riding my bike on Randall's Island and really enjoyed a path that goes under the Hell Gate Bridge. I was especially intrigued to find a freight track crossing on the way. I think it's a branch of the LIRR.Hell Gate Pathway |

The LIRR never got anywhere near the Hell Gate Bridge. I am sure there are no traces left of the Whitestone Branch beyond the swamp in Corona. Maybe you are thinking of the New York Connecting Railroad, a part of the New Haven RR. |

Wasn't the beginning of that video on the bridge that was opened not long ago between the Bronx and Randall's Island? If so, I think that track was a spur from the Harlem River Intermodal Yard. |

Yes, the Hell Gate Pathway leads to the Randall Island Bronx Connector. It provides very easy access to Randall's Island from The Bronx, especially when compared to the Triborough's pedestrian path. |

Yes, the bike path is very cool. I think they're letting the plants grow sort of like The High Line. I also liked the Wards Island Water Treatment plant. It had a very industrial 30's quality to it. |

Did you run into Serpico over there or what?In all seriosity when I umpire on Randall's and I'm in the Bronx, I park the car on I suppose 132nd and walk over that path to the fields. Screw them and their toll. You should have caught those signs next to those tracks which say the gates may be closed for up to an hour or two. I forget what they say but if I was stranded there I'd wish I paid that damn toll. Nice video. |

I did a 45 mile loop from Brooklyn through Queens, the Bronx, down the west side greenway and back to Brooklyn. The weather was supposed to be nice, but it wasn't and the wind was a killer going down the west side. |

I don't have the legs to do 45 miles. I really liked the feel of Randall's Island, especially the Hell Gate structure overhead and the Water Treatment plant. I also wish I had the time to visit some former SubChatters now residing in the Manhattan Psychiatric Center on the island. |

I have a friend who I was talking to one day and he told me he was heading out to inspect the crossing as his company maintains the gate and signals. I couldn't figure out exactly where it was as I hadn't seen that area of Randall's in many years. |
