Union leaks information about MTA's dead body storage program

Transit union: MTA stores dead bodies from tracks in break rooms

Members of the Transport Workers Union (TWU) claim that the MTA is storing dead bodies in break rooms after they have been recovered from subway tracks.

The story was first broken by The Chief-Leader, a newspaper that specializes in labor union coverage.

"You have pieces, you have blood spatter," said Derek Echevarria, the vice president of TWU Local 100. "It could be any contamination or disease."

Officials for the transit union say employees are subjected to seeing both body parts and whole bodies out in the open without warning.

The group's vice president said leaving the bodies out is not only disrespectful to the deceased and their families, but the discoveries often leave workers traumatized.

"These are bathrooms, facility rooms, break rooms — anybody can just walk in without notice," Echevarria said. "And that is another part of ending the service, because they're usually sent home by what they've seen, what they've touched."

Dear Mr. Echevarria;

What would you suggest they do with the bodies? Leave them on the tracks? Leave them in plain sight on the platforms for everyone to see?

Sometime gross shit just happens. A friend from grade school was the manager on duty when this incident took place. He was in the room when they opened the bag and discovered what was inside.

technically a body can not be moved unless authorized by medical examiner.
also a body and its fluids are bio-hazard and should not be handled other than trained professionals.

I am aware of the first statement. I was responding to his "so what" attitude.

Your second statement is the key.

The body is leaking fluids while in these employee only rooms, then station dept. employees can't go into their areas. They they have to clean it all up under special protocol. The next day and days forward, you will have some employees spooked by the fact that "I'm eating lunch and there was a dead body leaking fluids right there yesterday".

Let them keep it in the rear of the station till the ME shows up. If trains on that platform have to bypass the station, so be it.

IIRC, On Metro North, if a person meets a violent death on the tracks, the body cant be touched until the ME shows up. No moving anything, anywhere by anyone regardless of the effects on the service. Then there's involved equiptment issues.

It shouldn't take the Medical Examiner long to get to the station and remove the body. If someone is run over by a vehicle on the street and dies at the scene, the body doesn't lie there for hours.

I would have assumed, I guess incorrectly, that this would also be the practice at NYCTA, and anywhere in the civilized world. Heck, simply for liability issues, I'm amazed that NYCTA and/or NYPD will ever remove a body from where death occurred. I can see that this might have happened in the old, Pre-Quincy days. In these litigious times? OMG

As for the effect on employee morale, that's also pretty bad. I wouldn't be too happy if my employer (also a NYS agency) was storing stiffs in the print shop, break room, bathroom, copy room, my cubicle if I'm off that day, etc.

I guess I'm lucky that, to my knowledge, no one's ever died on premises. I have a lot of unhealthy co-workers, so I can think of several instances where people did not come back from 3-day weekends or from vacation. But they were not on-site!

From the little known facts dept; Back in the day when the railroads were the primary way to go in terms of intercity travel, not everyone completed the trip alive. To accomidate those who passed on en-route, NYCRR had its own little morgue at GCT. Sometimes there was considerable time before the next of kin were notified of the loved ones passing and the retrieval of the remains due to the distance and logistics involved, thus the need for a temporary slab room to keep the deceised on ice. With the thousands who traveled by rail back then, the law of averages would dictate that every now & then an individual would arrive at GCT at room temperature.
I don't know on average how many folks per week made their unintentional one way trip, but there was enough to justify the need for this facility. AFAIK, the GCT morgue was located on the lower level under the Graybar passageway, beyond their police office & lost & found where their medical dept used to be.
I wonder how many other big stations had morgues?

cruise ships do, on ships with about 1500 passengers and crew it was needed at least 4 to 5 times a year. and no not on ice, justed cooled, if body is frozen it destroys certain forensic evidence.
temperature was kept just above freezing.

Back then, the average American probably lived about 700,000 hours. Now it's probably more like 800,000 or 900,000.

Really sick people don't travel on a train, but on the other hand train travel is more stressful than sitting in a living room chair.

So a railroad probably has a death for every 1 or 2 million passenger-hours of traffic, which could still be a bunch per year for a big operation like MNRR or LIRR.

Sometimes really sick people don't know they are really sick considering that sometimes the first sign of coranary disease is sudden death.
