R-68's with SEPSA Displays

Hi Guys, it's been a very long time I've been here as I usually do my posts on Facebook, but I have a question on the R-68 with the CSIT, SEPSA, and the other one I don't remember what it was that are currently testing on the G. The question here I have is will it be for the basis that all R-62/A, and R-68/A fleets will be upgraded to have this type of module to replace the manual roll signs that are currently used in them now to make it easier for train crews to change routes on the dime, and also enable consists to be moved on such lines like the Q which doesn't have roll signs for 96th Street-2nd Avenue? Any help would be appreciated, nice to speak to you all again!

Testing to decide on the feasibility of installing these on future car orders.

The 62,62A,68 and 68A fleets are around 30 years old and I don't see transit doing a fleet wide upgrade of new electronic signs in cars that should be all retired 10-15 years.

As for the IRT Division, there is nothing much that can be done as far as equipment unless the MTA wants to spend money to have the R-62s/62As retrofitted with electronic signs. The BMT/IND on the other hand has a substantial fleet of R-46s which although older, were GOHed to provide electronic side signs, New OB drawheads compatible with the NTTs for towing/pushing purposes when necessary. While older, the R-46s are actually more state of the art than the R-68s and 68As which could mean that like the situation with the R-32s, the 46s might be around longer than the later non NTT cars.

It wouldn't seem worth the money to me to upgrade the 1980s fleets this way. What I WOULD like to see would be NTTs that can display a color other than red on the front/rear route signs. Those care have enough year left on them to be worth the upgrade.

I still think the 46 is getting the bum rush, ala R-30. These were only rebuilt from the ground up 20 years ago. The Pullmans are full stainless, unlike the R-44. They never had the framing issues that plagued the 44 from day one. How hard would it be to update to AC traction, and modern electronics?

More like 30 years. The draw heads were never changed, just the pin movement to below, rather on the sides.

They are now 40 years old. They are not being retired "tomorrow", their replacements are far from being delivered because the previous order, the R179's aren't even in service yet.

I am not going out on a limb to say the last of these are at least 5 years from retirement. That's 45 years old. So don't compare even their current age to the non air conditioned R30's. No comparison age wise, even today.

By 1975, Pullman Standard finally learned how to make good cars.

Also the Amtrak Superlienrs. Those cars put up with a lot of mileage, wildly varying weather conditions, and abuse.

R46s are stainless on the outside, corten on the inside.

The R68 displays are tests to qualify suppliers. The R68s may end up getting upgraded should the money become available but if nothing else, there will be additional potential suppliers available for the next batch of orders.

So, I am guessing the acid baths never made it to the frame? Every car car class from R-38 to R-44 rusted to death.
