But he didn't say the US Treasury would fund it. So what he's talking about is private capital in return for private ownership and tolling, maybe throw a bone at Gateway project with some Port Authority money.That has nothing whatever to do with running Amtrak's national network, which OMB, now headed by a Tea Party founder from Congress, will want shut down by October 1. Last year, Ryan wanted the RR retirement system abolished and merged into Social Security, even though it is project to be solvent for another 50 years. Amtrak is 9% of the railroad employment. Shutting them down would bankrupt the fund. Now connect the dots and it is obvious what the Republicans have in mind. |

Not just NY but most blue states send more to DC than get back (at least in the form of cold hard cash). That said, the benefit of "subsidizing" the breadbasket/flyover states is cheap food, not quite as clear cut. It's certainly possible to untangle but the end result would be the poor starving to death (the middle class would simply have less taxes taken out which would cancel out the higher prices needed for the farm states to survive). |
