Lou, while trying to keep the rhetoric down to a minimum, I don't know I just took a guess maybe he was sick it doesn't matter. His wife must be devastated as I'm sure some of us are. He wouldn't want us to stay silent, in fact he kept posting even when taking the beatings that he did over the years from raping station, train dude, and others. He wouldn't want us to stay silent, but all I have to offer is a moment of silence. One less person that I have to enjoy for the site

oh, so i should be a phony? how does that honor this man? when he posted stuff i disagreed with, in no uncertain terms i responded in kind. he insulted me, i insulted him. he mocked me, i mocked him.

what some moron train geek (that being me) writes on a bbs system has little importance. although i never care to correspond with idiots, the fact that i did correspond with selkirk should be the evidence proving that i didn't think he was an idiot. so in my estimation i had always been "honoring" him.

i'm not gonna waste my time reading or responding to any responses to my original post. i can guess what they say so why bother? but here, i'll add another line to what i posted:

so, in that regard, his participation on the board will be missed

Saying only something nice in this situation does not make you a "phoney". I think your sentiment was inartfully expressed - perhaps something like "though we frequently disagreed, he will be missed" would have been more appropriate.

I am very saddened to hear. While I never had the privilege of meeting 'Selkoik' I enjoyed his entertaining, informative recollections of running vintage IND equipment. He seemed like a true Renaissance man, highly knowledgeable in a large variety of subjects beyond the trains and rails.

And his endearing tendency of addressing everyone as "Unca".

Condolences to you. May be RIP. "Stand clear of the closing doors, please."

I know this is my third time around, but sometimes it isn't until you lose someone that you realize things you never thought about.

When English comedian Dudley Moore learned that his long-time comic partner Peter Cook had died, Dudley said something like "The f---ers dead! I can't believe it. There's a hole in the world."

Selkirk and I are of an age, and shared memories, such as of Pacifica Radio (the much better predecessor of "Public" Radio) and people and events, that are a kind of bond beyond the politics we did or didn't share.

Whenever I browsed SubChat or OTChat and I saw Selkirk's handle, I always looked to see what he saying, then might click forward and/or backward to see what the discussion was.

After the Third Avenue El had its last Manhattan run in 1954 they interviewed people along the line who said that they woke started in the middle of the night because they DIDN'T hear the train pass by.

Now I'm a bit startled by NOT seeing SelkirkTMO in the threads. So there's a hole in SubChat.
