New York state funds totaling at $30 million will go toward Alstom Transportation, Inc.’s $66 million expansion project, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Nov. 30.

The announcement follows a successful proposal by Alstom to produce next generation high-speed rail cars for Amtrak. Representatives say the funding will also allow the train manufacturer and service provider to add nearly 193 jobs in the state’s Steuben County within the next five years.

The state’s support for Alstom is said to have been an important factor in the company’s work to establish the $2.5 billion agreement with Amtrak to provide the modernized high-speed trains.

“This major expansion of Alstom's world-class manufacturing operations will not only create hundreds of new jobs, but also help drive the economic resurgence of the Southern Tier for years to come,” Gov. Cuomo said. “Investing in key industries across the state creates jobs and strengthens the economy in every region, and advanced manufacturing is the foundation of long-term, sustainable economic growth.”

The expansion will also bring about the renovation of Alstom’s Hornell facility—one of the largest passenger rail manufacturing facilities in North America, adding 60,000 square-feet of new production space and 10,000 feet of new track, including 4,000 feet of test track.

“We thank Gov. Cuomo and Empire State Development for successfully advancing this region's vision through the Upstate Revitalization Initiative,” said Jerome Wallut, president of Alstom North America. “None of this would have been possible without the Governor’s staunch commitment to this region and his continued dedication to making all of upstate New York thrive. We are honored to be partnered with the State of New York to create jobs and economic opportunities in the Southern Tier. Together, we are investing in people and facilities that will make this region the home of the best trains in the world for generations to come.”

Alstom’s Hornell plant has produced more than 8,000 new and refurbished rail cars that have been delivered to customers throughout North America, representatives say.

The company’s expansion project will be supported by state funding to enable project-related capital expenditures, such as construction, renovation, machinery and equipment.

Great news. I just hope that those opposed to the Carrier Corp. deal do not melt down over this.

The darling was all over the news saying "Crony Captalism".
Probably will cost her cabinet post she was whining for.

I don't know if it's true or not but if she said it and it cost her a cabinet post then, problem solved for you.

I have mixed feelings about this.
I am glad 1,000 job got saved, but now any company will simply play boy-cry-wolf and stick us, or a state legislature, with the bill.

(My, you get up early on weekends. Guess you are not a drinker).

Sadly, the details are not as rosy. Many of the "saved" jobs are desk jockeys who were not going to be moved south; and a second plant in a nearby town is moving south taking six or seven hundredmore jobs. The key issue to watch is whether United Technologies (Carrier is a division) gets any favors in the next round of DOD corporate welfare.
