Posted by Fulton Frank on Tue Oct 18 22:37:35 2016 Probably many of you noticed this, but I had a good RFW view going downtown on a B this morning. What a ride! There are some major grades, are there not - up and down. What fun, like a rollercoaster. Plus, there are those kick butt hairpin turns before and after 7th Ave when the line jogs over from 8th to 6th Ave. Going into 7th Ave, better hold on if you're standing. I think I noticed an ST 30 sign for that curve.I guess all the rolling hills is the line going under things like the LIRR tubes at 34th street and the #7 at 42nd? And, of course it's deep bore for a good while and then that lovely dash between 34 and W 4th. I love that ride! |

The B/D track from 7 Av (which becomes the 6 Av express track) enters 47-50 St along the wall, while the track from Queens (which becomes the 6 Av local track) enters in the middle, so between 47-50 St and 42 St the tracks change places: the B/D track dives under the F/M track and then rises into 42 St in the middle. Entering 42 St the IND tracks pass under the Shuttle tracks, then they rise at 41 St passing over the #7 tracks (west of the 5 Av station the #7 tracks wind south under Bryant Park from running under 42 St to running under 41 St). Entering 34 St the IND tracks dip under the BMT tracks, then rise immediately to pass over the LIRR tracks. And this was all constructed, mostly cut-and-cover, under the functioning 6 Av elevated tracks. An ST 30 sign would not be there for the curve. That sign would indicate that the following station is under station time control, which allows a train to enter the station at the posted speed and approach the train ahead as it's leaving the station, before the entire block is clear. You have R68/68A on the B so the RFW is there but it is a "secondary" view since you are looking thru one window and then the window in the cab end door.The view is there but is slightly distorted (sun-glare film on the inner door). |

IMHO, nothing beats the long LIRR run between East New York in Brooklyn and Boland's Landing in Jamaica. Its a straight shot and I've been on M-7s that have reached 70 mph on that run. Back in 1997, my job sent me for a day to Bay Ridge/Sunset Park. It snowed, so instead of driving from Yonkers, I took the 1 from 242 to 59th, then the B to 62nd Street. Railfanned the whole trip- both ways!! It was awesome!!I also railfanned the 6th Ave Express tracks on many, many shorter trips. Excellent- for the very reasons you describe. |

When LaGuardia took office in 1934, there was no funding available. Around that time, construction of the IND Fulton subway, between Lewis Ave-Rockaway Ave, was halted because of a lack of funding. Had there been funding, the IND line to Rockaway Ave would have opened a year earlier, in 1935. |

What’s interesting about that is that the engineers who run with the cab door open don’t seem to mind having their operation observed by anyone who is interested. However, an LIRR engineer I spoke to told me he keeps the candor window on the M-7s blocked with the metal shield because he didn’t want anyone looking over his shoulder while he was operating. |

I hadn’t heard anything about a new signal system on 6 Av but I guess it’s about time for it. However, since the signals the exp tk are relatively new, the existing signals might be able to be tied in to the new master tower. |
