I don't suppose they'll be taking the time during this M shutdown to try and correct that? I know from the geometry that it would be expensive. But perhaps they could loft the building on the end over an extended platform, running any necessary wires and other physical connections through pipes up to it? |

Back in the day when railcars were pretty much dumb mechanical beasties, a design could last for decades.The problem with that approach is that new technology is better by any performance measure and much less expensive. The railroad industry remained in a time warp and continued to employ 1920's technology until the end of the 20th century. The reason they abandoned the 1920's technology is that nobody would manufacture it. There are ways to write software that is pretty much hardware independent. The MTA did not follow such procedures, when they specified their NTT trains. I've wrote about placing LON Works in the specification. I've also wrote about the hardware specific messages between the LON Works nodes within the NTT cars. This pretty much guaranteed incompatibility between different orders. |

I remember R-17s on all IRT lines, however, I’m going back to the days of the Hi-Vs and Lo-Vs. The cars I actually never saw on the #6 were the R-12s, 14s and 15s. For some reason, the former Flushing Line cars never made it to Pelham. |

The R160 door controls are more computerized, they could probably program it to only open the first 8 cars if the computer thinks it's Metropolitan ave (or the conductor could lock out the car from the console). As it is now, they can open a single door leaf in each car from the conductor's operating position.As for "what if there's a mistake", they could put a platform edge with a low fence along the side of the building and signs up on the wall saying "exit next car". It's not like they're going to plunge to their death or be wandering a tunnel... |

I've been using 10 for some time myself and find it has many improvements over 7, and is MUCH closer to 7, than 8/8.1 ever was.Windows 10.1 actually is out (that's the Anniversary Edition that came out in July). |

I don't see Windows going to Rentware unlike versions of office. There might be a "monthly subscription fee" version of Windows in the future, but I think they will have to keep another version of Windows out there because there are many who use Linux and Ubuntu as it is and more will do that if it got to that point. |

It's funny, when I had Windows 98 at work, it sucked, eventually crashed and they installed Windows 2000, until I got a new computer that had XP. XP was good, and my last 2 work computers (desktop, then my current laptop) are running 7. On the laptop, I had the choice of having 7 or 8 installed (the advantage of installing 8 was that it was easier to eventually upgrade to 10), but I chose 7. I figured, it ain't my personal computer, and as long as 7 works, I'm good to go. Probably the next time they replace my computer (on the average, has been every 4-5 years), I'll probably have 10, but by then, I'll be close to retirement. :) |

That part actually makes some sense: Maintaining multiple legacy versions of Windows which each have completely different code bases for security issues is an expensive proposition. What's written for one version doesn't apply to the others, and keeping them in sync and updated has been expensive. Microsoft really wants to get it all down to maintaining just one version and this will eventually get them there.Folks wouldn't be inclined to upgrade just for the sake of making it easier for Microsoft, so this solution probably ended up being cheaper than any of the alternatives. You still need a legitimate copy (or at least one MARKED as such) to upgrade, plus it has the advantage of also encouraging people with older machines that were not compatible to buy new ones, and the Windows tax on new machines never went away, so there's revenue there. I for one though am grateful that I don't have to endure Windows or Linux. Piped off that ship back when Vista festered. :) |

Perhaps it will help untangle the weekday mess at 34th St. I especially like the N going back on the express tracks as it was before 1967. In addition I frequently use the R to go to midtown from Whitehall St. and I look forward to getting on a W train rather than waiting 10 minutes or more for an R to come in from Brooklyn. |
