Tuscarora Almanac - September 27, 1979 - The Book of First Runs

The 9th Avenue El is extended from 125th Street to 135th Street. The station at 130th Street will not open until 1893 (southbound platform) and 1907 (northbound platform).

Tuscarora Almanac - September 27, 2002 - The Book of Wrecks

The JFK Air-Train suffered its first casualty when an operator was crushed by concrete blocks. The Air-Train was not yet open to the public and test runs were still being carried out. The single car train was 121.

That operator was a young guy about my age. I remember feeling very bad for his family.
What did they think was going to happen with those concrete blocks?
A senseless death.

A typo... Ninth Avenue EL was extended in 1879, Guess our old eyes are starting or continuing to fail us.

It was a tragic accident but the "young guy," a recent immigrant from Jamaica, had no business operating the test train. I recall reading at the time that the young man was either a friend or relative of Roger Toussaint, TWU president.

The cinder blocks were in the cars to simulate the weight of a train full of people. The "trainee" was operating manually (not "driverless" as today's revenue service is), took a curve much, much too fast and the train derailed forcing the cinder blocks to crash to the front and crushing the driver.

Sad end to a young man's life but and incredibly stupid decision to allow a kid with no experience but "connections" to play with a train.
