It was a tragic accident but the "young guy," a recent immigrant from Jamaica, had no business operating the test train. I recall reading at the time that the young man was either a friend or relative of Roger Toussaint, TWU president. The cinder blocks were in the cars to simulate the weight of a train full of people. The "trainee" was operating manually (not "driverless" as today's revenue service is), took a curve much, much too fast and the train derailed forcing the cinder blocks to crash to the front and crushing the driver. Sad end to a young man's life but and incredibly stupid decision to allow a kid with no experience but "connections" to play with a train. |
