At the Bronx, the Harlem River goes northwest and the East River goes northeast. They are not the same "river" with different names. |

Harlem River is the same as the East River? My honorable friend Tunnelrat is mistaken. The East River is a tidal strait connecting Long Island Sound with New York Bay. The Harlem River was a true river that connected with the East River at Hell Gate and ran north to Spuyten Duyvil Creek. About 1895 or so the Harlem Ship Canal was built connecting the Hudson River with the Harlem River. Larry,RedbirdR33 |

I would think that the branch got its name from the fact that the actual terminal was on the Harlem River. The Harlem Div oF Metro North (former NYCRR) isn’t rally close to the Harlem River either but probably took its name to distinguish it from the Hudson Div which does run along the Hudson River. |

The Harlem Valley takes its name from the New York and Harlem Railroad, which was in turn named for the town of Harlem in the City and County of New York. |

Historically, the New York and Harlem Railroad connected lower Manhattan with Harlem (via Park Avenue); after reaching Harlem the RR kept building north until they reached Chatham. Their mainline remained classified as the Harlem division after being brought into the NY Central and has remained as such for a century and a half or so.The NH branch began as the Harlem River and Port Chester railroad; the name does indeed come from the Harlem River terminal, but that name merely comes from geography rather than any connection to the NY&H. |
