Funding Sought For Study to Determine Preferred Operating Positions (Standing/Sitting) of MTA Worker |

Posted by heypaul on Sun Aug 28 09:32:20 2016 I have long wanted to do a scientific study of whether motorman, conductors and omnibus drivers prefer to work standing up or sitting down. A survey of the literature shows that this is an unstudied area. I am looking for some seed money of $15,000 to start this project. |

The problem is that motor vehicle really need to be operated from a seated position. Also, the NTT trains really need to be operated from a seated position due to the placement of their controls, a situation that does not exist on R-32s, 42s, 62s and 68s since those cars have conventional controls. When I was a M/M, I had certain places along the lines where I would change from sitting to standing for my own personal comfort. |

As best as I recall, there was indeed a rule regarding that. You were required in the event of a personal reduction application to first close the cab sash, place your door check in the cab door, leaving it open only a crack, and then let it rip. The safety reason behind the rule was that a shoe arc on the third rail had the potential of igniting your personal reduction and causing a conflagration in the lead car. |

That is also correct as was the case with the R-44s due to the mounting of the control equipment on the console. The return to the older two handle control set up on the R-62s and 68s also enabled a return to the seating that allowed M/M to stand while operating if desired. |

True. I do recall seeing some UOPS and other delivery drivers standing while operating although I do suspect it would be a bit unwieldy. I doubt that buses could be operated standing without substantial design changes to the B/O operating position. |

My grandmother, who lived in Cambria Heights would get milk and juice from Gouz (rhymes with cows) in Elmont. That type of truck delivered the milk in those jingling glass bottles (with a bit of cream under the paper top). She got other dairy items from them too.Once in a while we would go to their store. What a treat it was for me as a kid to pet the cows. |
