That was quite interesting-- too bad none of it survived.

It's probably been sealed and walled off for many decades.

very interesting about the video.
again, different stories/accounts are always heard/traded among various people - I heard one account where an existing portion of the tunnel still existed but was walled/sealed off by City Hall station construction, and then heard another account that someone was able to access it years back, and found it filled with debris and water seepage. are these true, or just partially true, if that, with a lot of hearsay?

I was asking about the video.

I searched youtube but could find nothing tunnelrat described.

Maybe tunnelrat could tell us more about the video ?

It might be the February 2004 "Jane's New York" episode, with Joe Brennan.

I would imagine that with the construction of the BMT Broadway line, nothing at all survives of the Beach pneumatic railroad.

I'd guess with the right technology, the parts this groups is interested in could be extracted from the tape and digitalized....

These two stories I remember hearing some 40 plus years back - maybe on a fan trip, ERA NY Div meetings or at a Headlights stuffing session.

I also remembered after posting this, that in the second account - accessing the tunnel's remains and seeing seepage debris etc., part of the story was that this was done through a grate found in the wall of the tunnel itself. (probably north of the station? if this even exists?)

I posted these just to put what I'd heard, down "on paper." They are questioable at best, and could very probably be exaggeratiobns or not true at all.

If there was even a tunnel grate at all (!!) it was probably sealed a long time ago.

p.s. - how long is the Devlin's dept. store segment in your video?
45 seconds? a minute or so?
could it have been from an old newsreel?

That is what I understand. The ROW was obliterated with the construction of the BMT on Broadway.

Right. The BRT/BMT tunnel being many times larger, simply subsumed the Beach tunnel.

The Dual Contract builders knew there was no practical way to save the Beach tunnel itself, so they took a few photos to document things (I'm glad they did) and made an attempt to save the railcar(s). The car(s) got lost, probably in the combined craziness of massive construction and WW1.

I'd speculate that some construction exec got tired of waiting for a museum to it/remove them from wherever they'd been taken, and ordered it/them scrapped.

So this VCR tape was home recorded, not commercially marketed. Was recorded off the TV, from a telecast.

Right ?

Sounds to me like another 76th street story, legend, or whatever er the rumors of existing remains, not the pneumatic tunnel itself. If there are dimensions and any drawings of the car used maybe a duplicate car could be built for the TA museum. Karl

I think the tunnel exists in part. Unless if after abandonment the tunnel was filled in.

It would be easier to wall off the tunnel and save money.
