The contractor is scheduled to turn over the SAS structure to NYCT on 1 October for NYC transit to perform testing, and acceptance of all support equipment. Is power on today? not at this time, since the contractor still owns the incomplete RoW |

That's incredible. Even if they don't open in December, I no longer have any doubt they'll get this job done- and soon. When they started in 2007, I had zero confidence they'd get beyond digging. The SAS has just been one of those things NYers talked about forever. Absolutely amazing. Hopefully, with the experience gained from this project, they can move on to Phase 2- for which, as we all know, some tunnels are already in place. Hoping...hoping.... |

What modern-era transportation projects have been dug but not completed? |

Agreed. However, ESA is taking painfully long and is way behind schedule. (I have no doubt it will be completed.) And some of us think of the 1970s as being in the modern era. :) |

Well, not "dug," since it was elevated; but in the 1990s there was CTA's rebuilt Green Line east of Cottage Grove, about 3/4 mile. The structure, partly new steel at a lower level than the former Jackson Park Branch, was torn down, due to community objections, without ever being put into operation. However, ESA is taking painfully long and is way behind scheduleI suspect it's because nobody realized the stupidity of building an eight track train yard with platforms in a giant cave in solid bedrock. When compared with London's Crossrail or Paris RER's operation practices, we spent absurd amounts of money because we can't think outside of the box and the LIRR's too wimpy to achieve rapid transit turn-around times. |
