November 6, 2016 B Division Pick N short-turns to 96th, W part of N |
|
Posted by Union Tpke on Fri Aug 19 19:36:28 2016 Someone on New York City Transit Forums posted the link to the November 6, 2016 B Division Pick. The document shows that as expected, the N short-turns will run to 96th Street. In addition, the W train runs are classified as part of the N, meaning that the W designation is only going to be use for the public. Internally it will be part of the N. Additionally, W trains will still have its first and last trains originating/terminating on the Sea Beach Line in Brooklyn. The R train's late night service to Whitehall will began during this pick. |

Some N's going to 2 Ave and some going to Astoria will be confusing. I know, no more so than A's going to three different terminals, but we shouldn't be adding additional confusion. That's a step in the wrong direction. |

It will be no different than 2 & 5 trains going to New Lots during Rush hour... Its only a handful of N trains that will get laid up in Manhattan during the mid day hours, no big deal. |

This is currently going on.I sometimes want to ride a train from Union Square to 49th Street. I may catch an N or a Q, and occasionally it's signed for 57th, so I know I have to change to another train at 42nd. |

Is the impression that before the Q is extended, the short turn Ns that currently say 96th on the pick will just end north of 57th? And then when the Q is extended they would end together at 96th? |

Sounds like the N trains to 96th will be non-revenue moves, prior to opening of the SAS, in order to act as test trains on the SAS. |

That's what I was asking, but I just dug deeper and got the answer I think. As the Q is listed as going to 96th even though 96th won't yet be open, it is probably safe to say that 96th = 57th in this document until the official SAS opening day. |

Wallyhorse tends to suggest service patterns, such as his famous T train from east of the Williamsburg Bridge up to 2nd Ave which he has envisioned occurring for at least a chunk of the day. This case is more about the age-old problem of oddball runs during shoulder periods, transitioning the system into and out of rush hour. This is a systemwide process, and we're just seeing how it applies to the N. It turns out to be no significant news. Since the Q is being extended from 57th to 96th, those few oddball Ns that currently end there just have to go with it. |

Oranges.Wallyhorse suggested that when the L is shut they run extra Ms to 96th, even though they are desperately needed at Court Square. The MTA is planning to run extra Ns that aren't needed in Astoria to 96th instead. |

Peak express on the Astoria was a total flop. Unless it is ever extended, the only uses for the express track are reverse-peak to shave a few minutes off returning trains to Ditmars for southbound service. Or, reroutes. |

The default in a "free country" (like the one we were taught we lived in in Civics class in HS--not the one we actually live in) should be, as much info as possible available for citizens to look at. What data in thatdocument coul;d possibly be problematic for any of us to see???I am reminded of a comment in a railfan mag decrying the publication somewhere of reduced speeds on segments of a faltering RR. The mag opined the info was proprietary and might aid competitors as if anyone was naive enough to believe that deferred maintenance driven speed reductions could be hidden. The potential shippers certainly had a right to that data IMHO and why not everyone else? |
