CTA Uses It 2400 Series Historical Cars |
|
Posted by ChicagoPCCLCars on Wed Jul 27 10:50:26 2016 The CTA is using its 8-car 2400 Series Boeing Historical Fleet in special service serving the Chicagoland Baseball Classic. The cars ran on Monday. Today, Wednesday, train will leave 95th around 4:52pm, getting downtown around 5:15pm and to Addison about 5:35pm. I'm surprised we haven't seen photos. The door chain signboard will be different, LOL. Photos: CTA. |

I'm glad to see CTA seems to be taking its historic cars seriously.Have they ever tried to get earlier L cars back in the property from museums? |

I'm sure they could borrow cars from IRM although these have been refitted to draw power from the trolley wire. Or maybe from the Fox River Trolley Museum? |

Although we do have several examples of prewar equipment, the Train of Many Colors and the Train of Many Metals both include cars that came in around the time of CTA’s 2000s and later. |

Given that Wick Moorman let steam back on NS in his last couple years as CEO (no longer as vulnerable) I would say it is possible. After all, just keeping a couple historics is a major about face. And here is a thought. After all of the money wasted on the totally lame block 37 project, CTA should build a museum in the spce. Great attraction for tourists in the Loop, easy to get historic cars in/out.and options for excursions. |

Every car on the TOMC is sufficiently different from what is currently around that it's still a treat to ride. The TOMM though, everything right up until the end frequently MU'd with things that still run. The only novelty for me is post-GOH R38s, 40slants and 42s never ran in service in a train together [and I don't ever recall a post-GOH R38 on the Brighton!]. I think a train of DC Metro ROHR cars would invoke even less novelty for me. They were cool in the early 90s when they still had a 'ting tong' door chime and the interesting buzzing sound when moving. Now they're just dirtier versions of the other cars, with slightly more seats... |

Routes that used trolley/catenary and third rail were Lake St, Skokie Swift, and Evanston. There was a automatic switch that sensed the source of the current....third rail or overhead. We were taught to expect current to be present in the third rail shoes/trolley block even in overhead territory. I imagine museums have disconnected the shoes/trolley blocks. Where trolley poles have been added, the shoes and trolleys blocks are disconnected also.DH |

I know zero about CTA or its eqiptment. From what I see from these great pictures, they seem to be built close to IRT specs. My question is could they ever run in NYC IRT lines?? Im thinking of a fantasy situation on the MTA where they would have to borrow eqiptment from somehwere that fit IRT specs & CTA had spares to spare.Heck, who knew that the TA would borrow busses from DC transit back then when the Flxibles were pulled. When I saw that, I thought anything was possible. The reaching out preedent was set then. Just wonderin. |

Not a big problem, since NYCTS paddle shoes can be installed on el cars. It was done in the 1960s on the Qs which had their gravity shoes replaced with paddle shoes allowing the el 3rd rail between Bway and Met to be replaced with subway 3rd rail. |
