This new trolley stop with its entrances at Bedford and Driggs Aves, contributed to the closure of the Broadway Ferry spur. The spur, which closed at midnight, 07/03/1916, had an intermediate station at Driggs Ave. |

It shows how much thinking and effort was put in to building this facility- to see it abandoned only 40 years later as a sign of "progress".... |

If you didn't know about the actual Broadway Ferry el Termimal, one could easily mistaken it to be at Driggs. ave. (presuming you'd never been to this actual neighborbood area). |

We used to get off at Marcy Ave to go to Peter Luger's, so I'm familiar with the area. After the shuttle was closed on 07/03/1916, the spur was kept for 3 reasons: conduit for the Kent Ave power cables, storage for the 1000 series (I believe) gate cars that ran on the rush hour B'way-Bklyn to from Canal St, and possible restoration of shuttle service. The talk for restoration reached its height in 1921. As to why Driggs Ave was on your map, without B'way Ferry, I don't know. My maps show an unmarked spur, west of Marcy Ave. |

The nycsubway site has a 1924 BMT map showing B'way Ferry, but no Driggs Ave station. The next BMT map from 1931, shows a spur without either Driggs or B'way Ferry. |

I posted about the rush hour service on the Broadway Ferry spur before. Two 3-car gates (probably 1000 series like the ones that ran on the Bway-Bklyn)were inadequate and the side platforms at Marcy Ave were narrow. The problem in 1913 was that the BRT had to end regular ferry shuttle service because the Broadway el was third tracked to just west of Marcy's platforms. The center pocket track, over Keap Street had to be removed for express service. The Dual Contracts made no provision for a modified Marcy Ave station, similar to Myrtle Ave or Eastern Pkwy (yea- B'way Jct!). |

The dual contracts actually provided for a new express station at Willy B Plaza but the PSC report I have doesn’t mention whether it was to replace Marcy or be built in addition to it. Who would pay for the new station along with relocating the Fulton St el in downtown Bkln was somehow intertwined with the third tracking of the remainder of the Fulton St el west of Nostrand and east of Hinsdale St. Never having been resolved neither the new station at Willy B plaza, nor the relocation of the Fulton St El, nor the third tracking of the remaining portions of the Fulton St el were accomplished. |

The Willy B Plaza station would have replaced Marcy Ave. Since the BRT was committed to third tracking the Fulton el, west of Atlantic Ave, there was no money to rebuild from Hinsdale to Grant Ave. |

Third tracking/rebuilding did take place between Atlantic (actually Hinsdale St) and Nostrand but the third tracking west of Nostrand as well as the third tracking/rebuilding between Hinsdale and Grant was delayed due to the dispute of who would pay for the Willy B plaza station. It wouldn’t have made any sense for the BRT to rebuild into downtown unless the entire el were rebuilt since the eventual end was to have steel cars operate the entire length of the Fulton St el and into the proposed Ashland Pl connection. It’s not so much that there was no money available as to whose money would be used. According to the PSC report I read, the city was willing to complete the rebuilding of the entire Fulton El provided that the BRT paid for the new station at Willy B plaza and the stalemate resulted in nothing being done other than what was done between Hinsdale and Nostrand. |

From what I read in the Brooklyn Eagle, the Ashland Place project, as well as the rebuildings of the Fulton el fell apart because the BRT (and later the BMT) insisted that the City first finish the Nassau-Montague subway, south of Chambers St. (Perhaps, the Fulton St el was supposed to have been routed through the Nassau Loop?) The coup-de-gras came when Hylan broke out the plans for the IND Fulton subway. |
