The new RTD B line which starts next week may take the second place... two stations, 11 minutes. Not sure how many miles, but I am thinking more than 3 considering it will be passing two infill stations. |

The LIRR shuttles from Valley Stream to West Hempstead cover a distance of only 4 miles (I think). With 4 intermediate stations, that has to count for something... |

It's a mainline rail route, within the London Midland franchise, but operated by the manufacturer of the cars. |

In that vein, while not the shortest, a candidate for the smallest train set run by a Class I may be Canadian National's Kaoham Shuttle. It runs daily between D'Arcy, Seton Portage and Lillooet, BC with two overgrown speeders. I was particularly amused by these parts:The crew and passengers play a game of 'guess the temperature', awaiting the reading of the CN Detector to come over the radio. The Conductor notes that the service has actually seen investment in recent years ... now the train doesn't have to stop mid-way and let the engines cool down Definitely worth taking a ride someday! |

Those are the 7600-series trains, they carry revenue passengers NY-Secaucus and deadhead to Rahway to turn for an Eastbound. The opposite happens in the evening. |

This is interesting to me - has this service been around since SEC opened? Or did they find out that regular NEC/NJCL/M-E connectors were insufficient or the connecting traffic was a burden on the regular runs on weekends? I know in the summer, that first PJL line train on weekends can be jammed with hikers/campers who get off at Sloatsburg or Tuxedo. |

One would need to go back nearly 100 years, but the Manhattan Elevated ran shuttle trains between Grand Central and Third Avenue along 42nd St. Not sure of the exact distance, but it can be no more than 1/4 mile. |

No, the 7600 trains were introduced about six years ago to relieve crowding on NJCL and NEC trains in the respective direction, although they also have the benefits you mentioned. They are cancelled whenever Amtrak has to do additional single tracking. |

But it does beat out New Canaan, which is 8 miles and 17 minutes. |

It takes 15 minutes. There's a reason that hardly anyone rides them and they are always on the chopping block when funds get tight. It's a slow ride that takes you in a direction that you really didn't want to go in the first place... According to the LIRR Stations index at www.mta.info, it is four miles long. We've seen here in the past that the "distance from Penn Station" info there is questionable. Now that I'm off my phone and on my main computer, I used milermeter.com, and the distance appears to be about 4.4 miles. Also worth pointing out that the distance from Valley Stream to Far Rockaway is only 4.8 miles (but that only runs as a shuttle overnight). |
