My guess is they will finish the tunnels in less than 18 months. Whatever time it takes, the "G" and the "M" are gonna be sardine cans!

Maybe not.
They understand,I suppose, how critical this work is...and will deal with the disruption accordingly.
I mean...what choice do they REALLY have?

The MTA should run every other L train (or every third L train) to Essex Street, center track. The J and M can merge on the outer track prior to Essex Street. This would avoid overcrowding on the J line at Bway-Junction. Passengers continuing on the 6th Ave line can transfer at any other J stop, to avoid the non cross platform transfer at Essex St.

Major repairs have to be done on the M line beforehand.

Sardine Cans?

Great. the BEAR can do wonderful things with sardines.

Actually, you only need four buses to spped things up from the (M) stub.

All they need do is to circle this block over and over and over again. No fares collected, pax can use both doors if necessary.

Oh well, LION does not live in that neighborhood.

Obviously it'll suck for passengers along the Canarsie line, but I think this is a good thing. The damage by Sandy and age itself has to have taken it's toll on those tubes. I think it's best to shut them down, and do the work the right way.

Well, I suppose an 18-month, "get it all over with" closure really does make more sense that 3 years of single-tracking...

But what I don't understand is why the G tunnel and Cranberry Tube (A/C) has been able to be fixed nights/weekends only. If they can do it there, what is so different about the Canarsie tunnel that necessitates such a dramatic step as closing or single tracking 24/7?

The Cranberry is an IND tunnel, the 14th Street is an old BRT tunnel. Probly had more wear and tear to begin with, and lower standards of construction from the git-go. IND built to a higher standard from the start.

Especially the roadbed.

Given the Manhattan Borough President has already said as I understand it she wants the (L) to remain operating in Manhattan between 1st and 8th Avenues, I would not be surprised if she takes the MTA to court to attempt to force them to find a way to do that (likely out of fear 14th Street would be gridlocked if that did not happen).

And the original Interborough tunnels were built to last too, because of the long lease that was part of Contracts One and Two....

I tall depends (on who has the bathroom key).

If they will rebuild the stations, then no. If the stations they are not rebuilding, then two trains can be run, one on each track with no interlocking. Just put a motoman on each end. There is room for a third set of equipment on a layup track, so that ehy can be switched out for cleaning, maintenance and whatever. They would still need to be able to move through the tunnel for swapping out equipment and for major and scheduled maintenance.

If the use of the tunnels is not available for that occasional equipment exchange, then no, there could be no service in Manhattan. But it seems to LION that even though service will have to be zero at some time during the construction is should be possible to run said described shuttle service.

If there is no live rail in the tunnel, but the tracks are intact, a diesel locomotive could swap out the equipment once in a wild.
